spring wife's
for seven other a great year going on
hey Kevin how are you that you bet
I could I didn't touch the first chapter so sure maybe you talked about this but
a lot to call your attention to their name
there's a Montgomery County in Pennsylvania right outside of Philly
has side it's like at but like to thank court level to start
a giving out same-sex marriage a
like teachers writing like 25 like a 1996 law
which pretty awesome actually like I don't know if you cover that story
I didn't quite your important legal based in
a lot of people bill what that with that
house we caught up in court now because there's a State fan but obviously after
the Del Mar
well this is what I can this is what I understand
essentially what happened is I think it was about the at least five same-sex
couples
I went in applied for
marriage licenses in Montgomery County they were not denied these licenses
and they were issued the license is in fact one couple at the very least at
this point a reservoir day or two ago
i got married a that was
Alicia to ritzy and laurin Bloodgood
and the in what has happened to you right there is a
a.m. in fact I think I am I don't know if it's a statute or
if it is a yeah I think it's a a law a 17-year-old law
that banned same-sex marriages and
the ACLU has filed a suit about two weeks ago to challenge this law
I am and apparently my understanding is that the attorney general Kathleen Kane
refused in Chi now since I guess
about two weeks ago she would not defend the state's position
because she supports same-sex marriage it is unclear
whether or not Governor Corbett we'll
fight the lawsuit he declined to comment on
on both the attorney general's decision not to %uh fight the lawsuit
and he also declined comment on the decision from Montgomery County
to issue the licenses apparently the clerk they're basically said
I'm not going to be on the wrong side history I as far as I'm concerned
it's a you know it's their right to get married so I mean issue these licenses
so remains to be seen but a.m. at this moment at least in a fact
the a the the law
well the you can get married in Pennsylvania now I don't know
what special rights you have in pennsylvania be on the federal rights
that you have
are there are offered to the
to married couples but that's where
you know we're gonna find out the resolution of this lawsuit by the ACLU
will determine that if there are specific
a benefits to being married from the state
whether or not those are gonna be granted based upon the resolution
love this a this legal challenge and so
it remains to be seen but it's a really good indication I
that you know we're going to start to see these laws challenged and Chan
successfully
are both because there some legal standing now
I mean presumably there's a precedent on the federal level and because
you're gonna see more and more people simply say from a just sort of a social
%ah
so societal and cultural level I got no problem with this
so I appreciate your you're bringing it up Kevin because it
it was in my stack obviously and I had just neglected to get to and I and i
appreciate the car body
I didn't want more questions no I'll
West with that if it were to like even if it didn't work out through the
that the court process in pennsylvania sp
a way for gay couples in civil rights advocates to
attacked this in every state without fear a gay marriage then
I spider a sympathetic ear
in the court system in order just happiest dough into the pipeline
well I mean what what its predicated on
is the clerks who
presumably you know I guess in pennsylvania it's the County Clerk's
that issue marriage licenses it's predicated on them doing it now
again unless the law the statute is struck down
in Pennsylvania or let's say an amendment to our Constitution is struck
down
then any benefits the state gives to those couples will be denied
so they may have a marriage license but they may not get the benefits
hover some a of being married
that's something that has to be adjudicated but you know again
it also has to do with just sort of like a breaking down the societal
issues in in various states so it may work in some places
a better than others but I think it's not we're gonna continue to seek
