The Dental Assisting program is really an exciting program, it's super fun
Dental Assisting classes are very hands-on we do have the science
and the biology background in the
anatomy and the dental radiography course
Primarily though the dental assistant
practices and learns with
within the dental lab we have six operatories
That are just like what you'd find in a dental office they are
completely setup and supplied like a real life office and we use
the most modern techniques, that's
digital radiography
to make dental x-rays to keep are dental assisting students current
We are kind of a family, because we spend
you know the the whole day with our students
So it's not like they go to psychology and to math class and they have
different students in every class
they're with the same students
all year so they really develop a bond there's a lot of hands-on they're
gonna practice just like
they would when they move on to that employment I think anybody can be a
great dental assistant
obviously it would help if you are a little outgoing and you like people
you're able to connect with people
and talk to people well
we also have office management skills were we learn to make appointments
work with the computer
to do insurance billing
we also learn laboratory skills
making models, taking impressions
other than classroom work anna and out lab and our operatories that we have here on campus
students also go out and do
clinicials, they have three hundred clinic hours
during their program
the first part of that is at the University of Iowa, they get to work with
Junior Dental students uh... one-on-one and um... work on real patients
so they get to see what a real mouth is like then in their next semester they will go through
three hundred clinic hours in general dental offices, they do
a couple six week rotations in two general dental offices
and then they will travel through some specialty offices like endodontist,
oral surgery, pediatrics,
orthodontics
they graduate with a diploma unless they want to go on to get an associates of
applied science which we highly
recommend. We included the expanded fucntions dental assisting which
there are advanced skills
that the dental assistant would be
able to do under the direct supervision of a dentist
we're accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and our curriculum is
approved by the Iowa Dental Board
which is important for the students to work in the State of Iowa
Since our program is accredited, they can automatically sit for their National Boards
Exams
and if they pass their National Boards exams then they are a certified dental assistant
and that entitles them to be able to take expanded functions courses
Which we offer here at Scott Community College
uh... we have classes in nitrous oxide, temperization,
Bite registration,
Final impressions, gingival retraction,
those sort of things so they're really a great assest to the dentist
They can perform more skills the job market is great for dental assistants right now
our students always have an opportunity and always have offers to get a job
when they get the diploma they can go right to work
after they've passed their Iowa Boards
right away they get jobs in dental offices as a registered dental
assistant in the state of Iowa
financial aid is available for all of our students that qualify
you can always get a guaranteed student loan, anybody can
qualify for that
and we have a great financial aid office that's willing to work with you
and answer all your questions
