Rob Lilieholm, Assoc. Professor of Forest Policy: “The program is the Acadian internship
in regional landscape conservation and stewardship, and it's been an idea that's been floating
around for a while. It's been about a year in development, and the idea is to bring in
students, both undergraduates and graduates, from the U.S. and around the world and immerse
them in six weeks of, first, academic instruction and then four weeks in the field with different
nongovernmental organizations – NGOs, we call them.”
Dwayne Shaw, Downeast Salmon Federation: “My name's Dwayne Shaw, and I'm the executive
director of the Downeast Salmon Federation, located here in Columbia Falls. We do salmon
restoration at the local level. We work with communities and schools and landowners to
restore salmon, so we're taking a couple of locations and turning them into hatcheries.
We do outreach work in schools, in the community, and we've been working with interns from a
number of different locations, and the Acadia intern program is here now with us, and we
have two students.”
Danny LaBranche, Zoology Major: “My name's Danny LaBranche. I'm a senior at UMaine studying
zoology, and we're out here working with the Downeast Salmon Federation, going to all their
different parcels, their different easement places, mapping everything out, trying to
make it easier for the public to get access, making maps so that they can see where they're
going.”
Lilieholm: “It's been phenomenal, really. The students we have are really excellent
students. They're highly motivated, very bright, come from a range of backgrounds, so there's
a lot of cross-learning, cross-cultural learning that's been going on.”
