Hi I'm Ashley, I'm the osteopath at Ashley James Health. This is our first video from
this clinic, so what we want to do is give you guys answers to any questions that you
have about health or injuries. We're going to try to keep them very simple, very easy
to understand, so give us your questions and we'll see if we can answer them.
Today I'm going to talk to you about one of the more common questions I get asked in practice
and that is "when do I use hot packs or cold packs?"
Now I'm going to give you two scenarios which should help to understand or to remember at
least. So the first one is; imagine you're out with your friends and one of them gets
really angry or irritated. So what you're going to do is you're going to tell them to
go outside and cool off. So if you have a recent injury, let's say you've fallen over
or tripped, you've sprained something, you've got swelling, you've got redness, heat and
quite a lot of pain, the first thing you're going to do is put cold on it. So you tell
your friend to go outside and cool off because he's irritated or inflamed or angry and the
same with your injuries; irritation, inflammation, swelling, cool it off! That's going to help
push the blood away so the inflammation goes with it.
Now, the second one is; imagine you come home from work and you've had a really stressful
day, the last thing you're going to want to do is get in a cold bath, so you're going
to get into a hot bath. Now the same with injuries, if you feel stiff, put a hot pack
on it to help relax the muscles. What that's going to do is help bring blood to the muscles
and with that the muscles are going to relax with it. So tightness, put heat on it. Usually
this comes with an old injury something maybe weeks maybe months so you're left with a residual
tightness so just put hot packs on it.
Now if you found that useful, please press the like button, or drop us a comment below
asking your question so hopefully we can answer them. So see you next time.
