Hi, this is David Jackel on behalf of Expert Village and I'm here to talk to you about
coming up with a game plan for promoting a rock show. Before you can start doing promotions
for a rock show you have to think about what exactly it is that you want to accomplish.
Because different shows exist to serve different ends for example, maybe you're planning a
CD release party. In which case you want to be promoting and selling a CD or maybe you're
looking to get press or maybe you're looking for selling merchandise. Whatever the case
is before you can start planning you have to figure out what exactly what it is you
want to accomplish. The next step is to figure out who you want to reach. Who is your audience
going to be for this show? Are you looking to bring in college kids? Do you want an older
crowd? Do you want to get people who are in the music industry? The way you design your
promotions is going to have an enormous effect on who you actually bring into the show. If
you're trying to reach younger people, the internet is going to be the best way. Or where
to as an older crowd for example the newspaper is the more traditional format is the way
to go. However, regardless of what you think is the best way to bring in the people you
have to think about how your resources can match that. Because if the best way to have
lots of radio promotion and newspaper promotion if you don't have the money to back that up.
You have to think about other ways to still bring in the same people. So think about your
resources, think about your budget, think about who you know in the industry. If you
have good contacts now is a good time to think about how you can use them. Once you figured
out your resources you have to think about how you are going to divide up the work. Because
promotion is a lot of work and it can't be done by one person, your band is a team you
have to make sure everybody is working. For example, one person can be in charge of internet
promotion, another person can be in charge of getting in touch with the press, someone
who is good at designing can design fliers. The last thing you have to think about is
how you are going to measure the success of your show. So after you done all your planning
you can keep track of what you actually accomplished and see if you're meeting your goals.
