Miners throughout the country expressed condolences
after hearing of the disaster in Greymouth.
Maori in Huntly are grief stricken as most work in the mines.

Barry Maipi is one of the many Maori coal miners in Huntly.
He has worked in the mine for 20 years
alongside his father and siblings.
In the Huntly coal mine there are over 150 miners.
Around half of them are said to be Maori.
No one was permitted to speak to Te Karere today.
According to Solid Energy,
this is out of consideration for the Greymouth miners.
Huntly has suffered a similar incident to that of Greymouth.
There have been two incidents where 22 miners were killed,
which is remembered in this museum.
