DARRELL: We'll walk down here and see what the water’s like.
NARRATOR: As soon as night falls, they'll be frog hunting,
but in the meantime, school is in session.
Darrell Bennett, a veteran frogger,
shows his friend Ryan Kelly what he needs to know tonight.
DARRELL: There’s several different ways we can do this:
you can use the dip net, long handle, fine mesh dip net,
you can use a pronged gig.
We’ll use a spotlight to blind them,
and that way they really don’t notice us being there until it’s too late.
NARRATOR: All they need now is the dark of night.
DARRELL: There's one there, one there, three right there.
NARRATOR: With his spotlight, Darrell quickly and easily spots frogs.
Their eyes give them away.
DARRELL: Their eyes glow.
And the further between their eyes, the bigger the frog.
NARRATOR: The hardest part of this sport is simply getting to the frogs.
DARRELL: Two of 'em right there together.
You want to try for a double?
See him down there underneath that stick?
Get him!
That’s a dandy. You’ll have to be quick.
Good shot.
Good job!
Not too bad. Don’t lose him.
RYAN: I got him. DARRELL: Okay.
NARRATOR: There are two types of frog to hunt in Missouri: bull frogs and green frogs.
Both can have legs up to ten inches in length.
DARRELL: These are pretty healthy.
I've seen ‘em bigger, but this would be a good average to have.
My student's doing great.
NARRATOR: Frog hunting season is from June 30th through October 31st.
Missouri's frog population is plentiful.
On this night, Darrell and Ryan bag their limit of eight in about an hour.
RYAN: Not too bad, that’s fun.
DARRELL: That's your eight. RYAN: You're done; huh?
NARRATOR: Darrell has a new hunting partner.
DARRELL: I think I've trained a new harvester.
RYAN: He taught me very well. I had a great time.
NARRATOR: And Ryan is ready to come back tomorrow night.
RYAN: Oh yeah, oh yeah.
NARRATOR: He knows there will be plenty of frogs to be had.
DARRELL: It's easily learned. It's not rocket science.
You can pick up on it pretty quick. You just have to get out and just do it.
