- The world today is moving in a direction where it's underpinned by
intellectual property. It's the intangible, it's the ideas.
- The Intellectual Property Clinic helps people who create things, so it could
be creating anything from art to music,
graphic design. We help them at take their business and protect what
they're creating. - There's a bundle of rights that you get with things that you
create, content that you create, and how you protect other people from using it
or misusing it. - Boston is so startup friendly and
we're such an incubator for new businesses. The people who come to our clinic are
mostly people who can't afford legal services at a big firm
or whose issues are too small for a big firm to take on. - In the clinic, we
learn client intake, so we get a client from beginning to end. - It's getting
students practice ready in a way that they can't get just from the classroom.
These students actually seeing what they're learning in the text book come
to life and
be applied to real situations. - They're working under supervision of
realtor attorneys,
so they're carefully supervised, but it's the student that we put out at the front
line because that's what they are going to do when they graduate.
- One of the most exciting things that were doing in the clinic is linking
to the Sawyer Business School and the Sawyer Business School has a great
entrepreneurship program. - They have the collaboration, this idea that you can
take
the law side and the business side, which really should be working in tandem
anyways, and create what we're working on is just-
it's amazing. - We had an idea of the steps we needed to go through and
again, we had kind of scratched the surface, but what we really need it was someone
help us shrill down there and give us the actual steps and lay out the legal aspects to
the business and that's where the law clinic really came in and helped.
- Many of these issues take a multidisciplinary approach and need a
multidisciplinary solution. - The JD students in the IP center really
help to
better inform us as businesspeople about the inner workings of how to protect
ideas and intellectual property.
- This is just the beginning for the Intellectual Property Clinic at
Suffolk. - It's just an exciting time to be here, you know, the collaboration, interdisciplinary
speak to the president's mission and we're working really hard to embrace
that mission. It's the way of the future.
