Rachael, please discuss
colocation server access and security systems.
One fact that is often overlooked
by business owners
is that they can usually store their servers
at a colocation facility
where the servers will be more safely facilitated
and where bandwidth will be far less expensive.
With this arrangement,
businesses can update their servers remotely
via public Internet,
or by utilizing point-to-point connections or MPLS.
Colocation centers often have many layers of security
for entering the facility.
Most are manned on-site, 24 hours a day.
Access is often restricted by use of key cards
and biometric scanning.
Live video monitoring and tracking of the entrance
and exit of clients and employees
provide additional security measures.
Also, your equipment is stored in locked racks
that only allow you (or approved personnel) physical access.
Fire detection and suppression
is another security feature of colocation facilities.
Most colocation facilities have monitors for smoke,
heat and fire as well as other environmental monitoring
for temperature and humidity control.
As an extra precaution,
so that equipment is not needlessly damaged,
many colocation facilities utilize
what is called a “dry-pipe” system for fire suppression.
Colocation services allow businesses
to focus on the day-to-day functions of growing their business
without the distraction of maintaining network equipment.
Many colocation facilities
have on-site IT staff that can perform upgrades,
maintenance, or a variety of other services.
Some businesses may choose to perform maintenance
and upgrade tasks themselves,
either from a remote location (via the Internet) or on-site.
Either method allows a business to access their equipment
24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year.
