Discussions are essentially online forums, it's where anyone in the course
any student can ask new questions. So if I had a question as a student I could create a new
topic, ask my question,
asking for help from the rest of the course.
Teachers can use discussions as a teaching tool as in they can give a
prompt and they would like this has to discuss this online, and this can be a
continuation of discussion in class.
So discussions can be you know just as a communication tool. You can reply to them of
course,
and you can use whatever manner or whatever tools are most comfortable to you.
So i could type out my text in here or i could use the multimedia framework,
or I could actually record and give my response as a video that I record off of my
webcam.
Discussions in addition to being just a forum for asking and answering
questions in the course,
it can also be used
as part of the curriculum itself in a graded discussion.
In a graded discussion is we will let all the students know,
right here,
that this topic as an assignment, and that it's worth so they know that they
will be graded on the quality of their participation in the discussion. The reason
we did this was because there is some new teaching approaches that
are interesting, but at the end up burying the teacher in an incredible
amount of work.
When I was a freshman back in nineteen ninety-seven i had a teacher who use
discussions. And so instead of assigning us a reading to do the night before just to
do your reading. He would say, "do you reading and then participate in an
online discussion before class."
What happened was is that as soon as we hit the doors of the classroom
they can discussion was already hot.
You were right in the middle of this great discussion between every member of
the course, and so that the class time with so much more productive and so much
more useful because it's just a continuation. And even so one class ended
the discussion easily lasted
further past the class.
The problem was that it buried our teacher completely under work here to go back to
the discussion and find out how to grade it.
And so with the graded discussion we simplify all that work, we use our SpeedGrader.
So you can even apply different rubrics in and and even learning outcomes and all
the pedagogical parts that we provide,
and order that you can have a discussion
without burying yourself and work.
