Margaret Linley Beckner '11: "This summer I interned with the International Gay and Lesbian
Human Rights Commission in New York, New York, as their e-philanthropy and development intern.
The e-philanthropy and development intern is responsible for a lot of grant writing,
drafting, editing, reviewing, and dealing with reports for foundations and major donors.
I found the organization while simply googling, based on my interests, trying to find an organization
that addressed the human rights of *** minorities. IGLHRC as it's known does that;
I've grown up knowing that equality for all is extremely important, but also that the
struggle for equality is continuing and that we aren't there yet. So working with an organization
like IGLHRC, allowed me to take my passion and my activism and do what I wanted to do
in a workplace.
My international relations major prepared me to intern with IGLHRC because it is first
and foremost an international organization and my major is international, so I was prepared
to deal with multiple country's perspectives and cultural relativistic ideas and cultural specificity.
The work that IGLHRC does and similar non-profits or non-government organizations do is essential
because *** minorities are denied their basic human rights on a local, regional, national,
and international level in a systematic way. So it's important to break down all sorts
of systems that are in place that deny these individuals their rights and ensure that they
do have the respect and recognition of their rights."
