Service Learning is important because it gives you an opportunity
to get out into the community and to give back.
>> I think that all students should participate in
Service Learning because it gives you real life experience.
>> It really builds character.
It, there's so many things you can do out here
besides just stay in a library and read a book.
>> One of our professors uh,stated that if we would like some extra credit,
towards our final grade, that this was something that we could do.
So I jumped on it.

>> Service learning combines academic instruction
with active community service, utilizing critical,
reflective thinking to examine the world
around you, and your civic responsibilities.
It is not volunteering.
It is a mutually beneficial partnership allowing you to apply what you learned in
the classroom To the real world while
developing new skills, exploring career possibilities and increasing
citizen support. >> Service learning is a pedagogical
tool that faculty can use in the classroom to help students learn.
They can use service learning to teach a lesson.
So, you have students experience outside the
classroom what is being taught in the classroom.
>> We decided to partner with the program because it seemed
like a very win-win for both sides. The students would be able to earn hours.
And we would be able to have awesome volunteers which has happened
so it's been a beautiful partnership and I'm very excited about it.
>> They have very different, various programs that we can volunteer at,
and depending on where you live, and your lifestyle, there's multiple choices.
But I chose the adoption
center because. I love animals.
>> I found out about service learning
through the website there at Brookhaven college.
And went to the website and I started looking for opportunities.
And I put, picked out a few things.
And some things didn't fit my schedule so well.
And this seemed to work.
And because they followed up quickly back with me, I was able to get started.
>> We had enjoyed partnering with
the Dallas County Community College District Service Learning
Program because we've had such wonderful volunteers from them.
the students who have come into
our program through the Community College Program
have not only done a wonderful job and interacted well with our clients.
They've been very dedicated.
They've just worked so well with our clients that they don't want to leave.
>> Hold
her real quick so we can check her. >> Okay.
>> See if she's cooperating.
>> There's three benefits to service learning.
It helps the faculty, it helps the students, and it helps our community.
>> Through service learning, I've learned what
it takes to work in a professional environment.
I'm learning what I need.
To know, as far as being a success in a non-profit
organization which is what I intend to pursue in the future.
So,
I have hands-on skills in that field now.
>> When service learning students come in we
like to tailor their needs, specific need to what
their skill set is or what it is they
may be involved as far as obtaining their degree.
>> I think it's kind of an opportunity to work
with a variety of people that maybe I don't always see
in my daily life and
it helps communication skills, it helps understanding.
No, each for each person, so you get dos. >> Okay.
>> Okay?
>> The best part of the service learning program, for me, is watching
these young people develop into adults and gain that sense of maturity and that.
Begin their path of service to the world. >> I'm usually a quiet guy.
Out here, I've been really challenged in being involved, intuitive open mined.
I have to be real organized schedule,
and it's something that we all have to learn nowadays.
>> It's an opportunity for students not only to learn what they are.
Studying, to apply what they're learning in the classroom into the real world,
it's an opportunity for them to give back to their community as well.
>> I believe service learning is something that tries to get
the students to get out in our society to volunteer our time,
not just because it's good for our
grades, but because it, we're actually helping people.
And it's a great community service.
>> And I think everyone should do service learning because, as
part of the community, I think that we should give back.
I think that we, it shows how fortunate that
we all are, and by giving back, you realize that.
And sometimes as students you think that everything
is just school and, and it all revolves around
you, and you realize that.
getting out there that everybody's doing the best
they can and that it helps to give back.
>> When you actually interact with the community
by being a part of the service learning,
it lets you know that people, successful people,
come from all areas of life, you know?
Your path may be unorthodox but that does not determine where you're going to go.
And in the process, you can be helping another
student or just another person in the community.
>> At the end of the day when, after you come out and do your
30 minutes or three hours, you feel pretty good at the end of the day.
>> I've seen volunteers that just light up, because when you have an
animal that you've worked with, when you've kind of got to know the animal.
Get adopted, that right there is rewarding.
You get the service hours but you also get that reward as well.
>> It's always, to me, a benefit for us to have that energy of students
coming in who are so willing and ready to explore and to.
do a, do a good job and are working towards their degree.
So, it's been, it benefits us in a way that also benefits the student.
And to me it just seems like it's a win win for everyone, or
for anyone to be involved with this program.
>> It is an amazing experience to watch.
These students, work with the community, step out of the classroom
and work with other individuals from diverse areas.
And see the changes that they experienced, to see the lessons that they're learning
outside the classroom, it's.
It's, it's quite rewarding to see these students and to hear their stories.
>> Service learning is helping me pretty much get better grades in
school, and in doing so, at the same time, it's helping me grow as a person.
>> Service learning makes me just feel good about myself, but it also makes me
feel good about the community because you
realize that there are people out there really
devoting their lives to helping other people,
and I always feel good when I leave.
And so, I, I, it makes me feel good about myself.
It makes me feel like I'm kind of here for a
purpose, and that I'm contributing to the community that I live in.
>> I think it opens up a whole potential of awareness, of a world that
they might not see necessarily when they're in
school, or at home, or in the supermarket.
So, there's a whole world out there and we're waiting for y'all to come join it.
