Hi, everybody.
It's Patrice of Afrobella.com, here to demonstrate
four different bright lip colors for women of color
or African American women.
The thing is, with bright lips, the general rule of thumb
that most makeup artists will recommend you do is
don't go too bold with the rest of the face.
So you'd want to kind of keep things subdued in terms of
blush, in terms of eye makeup.
In my personal experience, I would say that a smoky eye or
a cat's eye like what I've done here pretty much goes well with
every kind of bright lipstick you want to possibly wear,
because it takes the focus off of the eye and allows your lips
to be the star of the show.
Of course, rules are made to be broken, so if it's the holiday
season or if you're just feeling festive,
or if you're just a bold person in terms of
your fashion and your self-expression,
then you might want to try something a little bit --
go for the bold eye and the bold lip, it's totally up to you.
But in general, the general belief is that less is more.
So here we go with lipstick number one.
My lipstick number one is hot pink, so I think that hot pink
in general is a bright color that can look really good on
women of a variety of skin tones, but on dark skin,
it just has more of a pop.
And this particular look that I'm wearing right now is Mac.
This is the "Dare to Wear" Lipglass,
and it's got an extremely fine glitter in it.
The name of this color is "Gimme That."
So it's got a really fine glitter to it.
In general, I would say glitter is best for women
who have really smooth skin.
Glitter can kind of amplify some of your skin's flaws sometimes,
especially if you wear it on the eye, but also if you wear it on
the lips, and when you're going for a bold color, you want
something that's not going to settle into the lines on your
lips, it's kind of going to give you an overall creamy appearance
that is flattering.
So that's my advice when you're looking for the right shade of
hot pink; you want to find something that's going to give
you that pow without drawing too much attention to
the flaws that you might have on your lips right now.
This particular bright lip that I'm wearing right now is more of
a coral pink, and that's really hot for spring into summer,
and even early fall.
I think that coral is a very -- it's a hot shade, it's a very
outdoorsy color, and these colors, a lot of women of color
kind of assumed in the past that corals and peachy pinks weren't
for our skin tone, but they look great on us, especially if
you're wearing something that's a little bit more
light of a color, a little bit more summery.
A pop of coral is absolutely delightful, and it really is
very complementary on a range of darker skin tones.
This lip gloss that I'm wearing right now is by British brand
Illamasqua, and they're really well known for highly pigmented,
very strong looks in terms of eyes and in terms of lips.
So this is their intense lip gloss and follow, and I think
it kind of leans a little bit more towards red.
Red is the quintessential bright color that every woman wants to
wear, and when looking for the right red for women of color,
you really want to think about your skin tone
and what would go with it.
So if you want to accentuate your teeth and your beautiful
smile, you might want to think about something that has
a little bit of blue in the red,
so it kind of gives your teeth that pop.
Reds can be muddy, or they can be really bright,
or they can be -- lean a little bit more orange,
they can lean a little bit more pink.
It really is up to you what kind of red you're going for.
There is a red out there to suit every single skin tone,
so it's just up to you to go out to the department store,
or the drugstore, and find the right red that really,
really speaks to you.
Last but not least, I'm wearing purple.
Purple is my favorite color.
Purple is like my neutral, and so I really am a big fan
of the color in general, especially as we're going
from fall into winter.
Purple is a very versatile and bright lip color, and why I say
that is, you can wear purple lip gloss that's just like this,
that's very bright and highly pigmented on its own, or you can
make it darker and a little bit more nighttime, a little bit
more wintertime, by using a darker lip pencil under it.
So you might want to think about -- there's a brand named Nyx,
they're available at Ulta, and they come in a range of
really deep, dark colors that are perfect
for African American skin.
Those are the four lip colors that I identified that always
look great on African American skin.
I hope that you find one that is right for you
and that you fall in love with.
Thank you.
