Before adding content to your site, it's important you know what 'content' really means in Drupal.
Content consists of some information that is the focus of the page and can stand alone.
For example, an article can be content. A menu or banner is not content.
You'll notice that before adding anything to your Drupal site, there are multiple links
on the page to start creating content. However, to add content when these links are removed,
click on the 'Content' link of your toolbar. Here you'll see a detailed list of whatever
content you make. It tells you its name and type and allows you to easily edit or delete it.
Click on 'Add content'. As you can see, you have some choices. As per the descriptions,
you should use articles for news or posts and basic pages for static content. Various
modules will add to this list -- the Blog module will add the blog entry content type here.
You can create your content type as well by going to 'Structure' -> 'Content types' -> 'Add content type'.
We'll create a basic page.
This content type allows you to provide a title and body text. Let's call this page 'About Us'.
To add to the body, just type in the text box. The default text format is using filtered
HTML, which allows you to use a limited range of HTML tags. You can also type in full HTML
or plain text.
Once you've finished with your body, you can choose to add a summary by clicking 'Edit summary'.
Summaries are shown as previews to the content where you display a link to it. It isn't necessary
to edit the summary at all, since Drupal will automatically use the beginning of content
and trim it to create a summary. However, if you want to override the default summary,
perhaps for an article, you can do so.
Scrolling to the bottom of the page, you'll see the settings for this content, the first
of which is whether to include this in a menu. Since this is an 'About Us' page, we will.
You can do this by clicking to provide a menu link. Give a title and description and specify
which menu you would like it to be on. You may change the weight if you know you want
it at the beginning or end of the menu, but otherwise leave it as is for the time being.
You might also want to give it a custom URL path.
Comment settings determine whether users can post comments on the content you publish.
The publishing options are few, but important. If something is 'published', it is public
-- it can be seen by anyone who visits the website. Only administrators and the user
who created the content can view unpublished content.
'Promoted to front page' indicates whether or not this piece of content will be featured
automatically on your home page.
'Sticky at top of lists' is an interesting option that allows you to 'pin' content to
the top of generated lists.
For example, if I had a list of articles that had all been promoted to the front page and
one of them, even the oldest one created, had 'sticky at top of lists' checked, it would
be shown as the first article in the list.
You can click 'Save' to save your new page and close the window. You'll be on the page
you just created and you can see your custom URL in the navigation bar. You can also see
that this page has been added to your menu.
You can edit any content you make by clicking on the link under the title. This will bring
you to the previous screen that you used to create the content.
As always, remember to hit save, and your changes will take effect.
