“Watch the Show, Play the Game, Change the World”
Defiance, the TV show premieres Monday, April 15 on SyFy,
so prepare yourselves for groundbreaking transmedia as Defiance the Game
- which went live on April 2nd - ties in to the show through storylines and
events that follow the shows plot.
Both the show and the game have been created to co-exist,
with Syfy and Trion Worlds collaborating on the project since 2008.
Being something that has never been done before, it was a pretty steep learning curve for both
camps. For example,
Trion needed to know way back in 2010 who Syfy cast to play the main characters so that
accurate models could be created for the game.
Nick Beliaeff, senior VP of development at Trion
has promised that the game will alter every single time an episode is on the air,
with special events and missions being timed to the airing of each episode,
for example: it has been reported that one episode of the
show will end with a virus outbreak, and players within the game will get to work
to create a vaccine.
It's interesting to note, however, that there are some differences between the
game and the show, such as the show takes place in what was once
St louis, while gameplay is centred around San Francisco.
This was done due to the original intention of having both platforms based in the same
place - while being awesome in theory -
turning out to be 'problematic' in practice.
Clearly Syfy are confident in the show doing well as season two is already being written,
but as a gamer I am looking forward to seeing just how interactive Defiance will be.
Will you be watching the premiere whilst playing the game?
