Lovely. If you all huddle together, that would be great. Hello, I'm here. No, I'm going to stand here.
Bastille! How do you feel? Congratulations for winning Best British Breakthrough at the
Brits 2014! How are you feeling?
Um, good.
Yeah, it's amazing. It's got a light switch on it.
It works. This is really interesting for all of you. Sorry. No, it's wicked. That was completely
unexpected, and now we can retire and give up music.
Yeah. Finally.
And go work in McDonald's like we always planned.
You mentioned on stage that a year ago that you were here Dan without the rest of the
boys, and that you'd never have expected to have won a Brit Award and to be performing,
which you're doing later. Has it been a good year for Bastille?
It's been a wicked year. I think it's a year that literally no one, apart from a couple
of people, might have predicted. Thanks Hew. Us included. So it's just been insane, and
you know we've been able to go all over the world and I don't know. It's been... I'm being
incredibly inarticulate, but it's been ridiculous.
There's also been a very clear correlation. No band. None. Yes band. Yes.
Yeah exactly! You guys are the lucky charm.
So, think about that in the future.
Also, you're one of the successful British bands who have done well in America this
past year. How do the American audiences compare to the British crowds? And how's it going
in the States in general?
I mean, we've been very, very fortunate indeed that everywhere we've gone we've been fairly
well received.
But yeah, we've been absolutely blown away by the response we've had everywhere we've
gone. I feel incredibly fortunate.
Again, we are incredibly unambitious, and we thought oh we got to release an album.
That's probably as big as it'll ever get. So we never imagined that things would go
as they've gone here. We never thought we'd even had a shot of going to America. The first
time we went there, I completely lost my voice, and we had to stop the gig after three songs,
and we were like wicked. We failed.
So yeah, it's ridiculous that Pompeii is doing what it's doing in the States, and yes the
crowds there are wicked. They're really nice. There's none of cynicism that we have here.
Everyone's like... Because here, you're from London. You're like I'm in a band. People
are like, oh that's embarrassing. In America, you're like I'm in a band. They're like wicked,
let's talk about it. It's great for self indulgent people. Not that we are.
Do you think that's changing Bastille? Do you think there's an appetite for more singer/songwriters?
You're up against Disclosure, Laura Mvula, London Grammar, Tom Odell. So you must be
happy that solid songwriters are coming back.
Yes, I mean, like every other artist in the category as well were just incredibly strong.
So again, we feel very, very lucky to sort of won this award, which is just mind blowing.
It's a nice big mix as well of like groups, solos, men, women, like producers as well.
Obviously, with Rudimental and Disclosure, it's a massive year for like production bands
as well.
It was nice too because across festivals last summer, like we saw all of them. Like Laura Mvula,
Disclosure, everyone play. Like everyone's an absolutely phenomenal artist anyway.
We're gushing. It's lovely, isn't it?
I know. I'm just loved up.
Go and enjoy your night. Bastille. Thank you very much.
Thank you, Hew.
