This is Elian Evans of ElianEvans.com and today I'm going to quikly show you how to
add Google Analytics to your website. Particularly in a Wordpress blog.
You can do this, use Google Analytics for basically any kind of tracking for any kind
of website. It doesn't have to be Wordpress. It doesn't have to be Blogger. It can be anything.
But it really drills down and gets the knitty gritty details about your website.
So here I'm at the Google Analytics page. I usally just type in analytics.google.com
and it will forward you over to this. Create an account.
I'm going to sign in because I already have an account.
We are going to create a new account. :55 To do that, you are up at the home screen
right here and it is showing all accounts. Click over here to the right to Admin. Then
add new account. This is for my friends at Friends Farm and Catering. Add the website
address (1:14 I have mine in another tab). Friendsfarmandcatering.com. Then scroll down
a bit.
Industry, this is just for their tracking. Business is the most generic one.
Put it in your timezone. And then create an account name. It doesn't matter what you call
it.
Alright, data sharing is optional. I usually just leave it. Accept.
Alright. So what it's going to do is give you this tracking code that you can just cut
and paste. But one real important thing to do is you want the subdomain to be on. That
will let you include the www. Save it.
There is so much that Analytics can do. You can spend months trying to learn all the knitty
gritty. But really just the general information is what most of us are wanting.
So I can either enter the tracking number into a plugin on Wordpress or I can actually
add the code into the [Wordpress] code if you know what to do. But we're just going
to do a plugin.
So here I'm over at their website 2:55. And I'm going to log into Wordpress.
Then go over here to the left and click plugin, add new. If you don't see this list on the
left you might have collapsed it accidentally. You can always click that little triangle
to open it up.
Let's just type in analytics. Now because this is a client of mine, and they are not
going to go to Google Analytics to look at their data, I want it to show up in their
Wordpress backside in their dashboard of Wordpress.
Google Analytics for Wordpress is good if you don't mind going to Analytics. If you
don't want to go to Google Analytics, install Google Analytics Dashboard. Click on install
now. Click ok.
Alright, it's doing the backend stuff 4:11. Then you need to activate plugin.
4:21 Then you've gotta go put in your settings. Sometimes some of these plugins will have
their own little thing on the left. This one is under settings. Sometimes it will be under
tools.
4:37 It's asking me to start the login process. Grant access.
4:49 It's going to pull in all the different accounts that I have with Google Analytics.
I need to just scroll down here. It's probably this all website data. That's what it will
name it. I went back in a little while ago before I created this and changed the profile
name. If this is your first time, that will be the only kind there.
5:13 If you are sharing your Wordpress site with other people. You might want to let other
people see the statitics. Change to editor. The post stats display I don't like to do
because it really seems to slow things down. But that's up to you. That part is done. [click
save]
5:40 So if we go back to your dashboard for this one. Scroll down. It has added it down
here to the bottom. We just installed it, so it isn't going to show any statistics.
5:52 Now if you want to move this up to the top of your dashboard. Just click on the header
of it. These are like little widgets. And you can just slide it up. That might be the
most important thing. And it should save.
6:08 So that is all you have to do on this end. Now, if you install it with one of those
other plugins you might only need this tracking code. It probably wouldn't go to the website.
Where you went to authorize to pull this information.
6:27 But one thing we really want to do is filter out so it will not show your statistics.
And I am going to record that in a separate video.
