Good afternoon everyone and good morning to those on the West Coast. A couple of things
before we started, we will take questions at the end of the presentation. If you have
questions, please put them in the chat box. I’ll send today’s sessions to all the
attendees. I'm going to go ahead and pass this over to
Besty who is the program manager here at GSA and she’s going to introduce our presenters
and the topics today. Hello everybody and welcome to turn the page
on great content with Flipboard. I'm glad you can join us today. I want to thank my
colleagues at NIH, for working with Flipboard and I want to thank Flipboard for getting
that up online. If anyone wants to use it the board you will be covered in your registration
process. You can find the terms of service at the terms of service@clipboard.com
And we have great speakers today, I want to introduce you to Carolyn Weyforth Glanville
who is the head of influencer relations and publisher marketing, where she works with
celebrities from Madonna to the New York Post and publishers like CNN, Washington Post,
New York Times and others. Prior to working at the Flipboard, Carolyn
work this chief of staff for Demi Lovato and other artists and has worked on two presidential
campaigns in communications roles. And Caleb Smith is the digital communications director
for House Speaker Ryan, working these all digital efforts for the speaker. Prior to
joining Speaker Ryan, he was a similar role for speaker Banner, where he had experience
in adopting Flipboard as part of their digital efforts. So Carolyn take it away
Thank you so much. Really glad to be her today. Hopefully this will be informative for everyone.
We will have questions at the end. As Besty said, I do have some experience both in campaigns
and working on the hill. And with the communications background, I’d
love to see a tool like Flipboard can be best adopted into communications plans. So with
that I will jump right in. Hopefully I don't talk too fast.
Flipboard is the one place for all of your interest and all of your content. You can
collect it and set it up, which obviously we will get into more detail. And you can
really create that one-stop shop for all the things you are interested in, whether it will
be for personal or for work. I want to start by playing a quick video,
which will give a sense of what Flipboard is.
[ Video being shown. Captioner has no access to video either audibly or visually. ]
As you can see, Flipboard is really a place for all of your interest. It can be both a
place where you can discover great new contents for the world’s top publishers, you can access your social
networks or other people’s social networks. You can follow along with them much as you
would on Instagram, twitter and things like that. You can collect it and share content,
and that’s where Flipboard is so unique, you can use it in two different ways -- you
can digest content information and then you can collect and share. And then of course
you can share your perspectives and connect with ours.
Flipboard can also be a unique social platform for you as well.
Flipboard is your social magazine and it’s available on the web, under tablet and on
the phone, both Android and IOS. We have over 80 million monthly readers. There are thousands
of contact sources. We work closely with publishers like CNN, New York Times, Wall Street Journal,
Washington Post. Not only do they have presence on Flipboard, but they also give us feeds
and us Flipboard as distribution. For example, the Washington Post have a magazine for every
presidential candidate on the race, so they have at the beginning 17+ magzines. CNN has
a magazine to support the presidential debates and pollings.
There over 20 million magazines. That number is probably larger today.
How can you use Flipboard ? You can stay informed on the news in your
sector. You can engage with like mind individuals. Flipboard can be used as a social network,
so you can see what other people are creating, and not only can you follow CNN as a content
source, you can also follow a magazine that someone’s created it, not being a content
source for you as well . You can distribute your blog content. If you
have blog or other contents creating on your site, contents can be flipped into the magazines
on Flipboard. And then you can share that through Flipboard.
You can create a team magazine to share and collaborate. At Flipboard, every employee
is on a magazine and we share content throughout the day with each other. No one outside of
the group has access. Is a great way to collaborate and share information.
You can collect relevant materials and document the experience of the event.
If there is anything you are hosting, you can flip in content information prior to the
event to let people prepare for the topic and issues. During the event, you can post
images and articles that are being written regarding the event. After the event, you
can post content as takeaways for people. So you could really use this as a content
sources. It can be an experience of those in attendance
and those who cannot attend as well. It can be your own content or content that is affecting
the work you are doing the budget agency is doing. You can also collect press conference
– or the project you’ve been working on. I want to turn the conversation over to Caleb,
so they can talk how they implemented Flipboard. Thank you Carolyn. My name is Caleb Smith
and I’m a speaker of Paul Ryan. We were confident putting out flyers and videos etc.,
anywhere from 4 to 7 different places per day. Flipboard is a great place to house all
that information quickly and easily. We chose it because of the beautiful visual layout
of the platform to promote a lot of our visual stuff, videos and photos.
To be totally frank, I use it every day of the week. [Indiscernible - speaker muffled]
how much extra effort will it take on our part is something we consider.
It only requires two or three clicks of the mouse. In most cases, to reach out to audiences,
[Indiscernible - speaker muffled] it is allowed us to reach people whether they are mobile
or have desktop access as well. We have created two different magazines and
one was mostly to promote our contents. The other editorialized about these articles.
That was a fun way to use it as well. [Indiscernible - speaker muffled] we used
one or two of them before we began to expand. Carolyn: I will pull up so we can see the
content that you guys created to support your magazine.
Second speaker: [Indiscernible - speaker muffled] I’m gonna to use content to create content,
the government is behind the times, not innovating and basically not adopting the digital best
practices, so when we be kind of be back against that, we not only use this products better
but talk about using the products better. It has benefited us and we did a couple of
events where help is coming to the capital and it was a huge deal. It was a great way
[Indiscernible - speaker muffled] In doing something like original content,
or your own blog content, it can we that to your website -- link back to your website.
Thank you Paul. To move on, we will walk you through on how
to get started, we’ll do a demo and I am going to talk about this in the act -- application.
There is also a web product as well. Through the process we you get to choose different
topics. You can search for different things are if you scroll through, there are different
actions. You might set up something like photography of animals. If you are setting up for a business
perspective, you might search the terms related to your agencies. The picture on the right
is my profile. You see there a picture of myself with a little description. You can
update this in the application and online. Underneath my profile, are all the different
magazines that I’ve created. Some of those are private. I have the 30 thousand followers.
When you go through the process of choosing a different topics that covered your story,
that's a great way to start seeing content that might be relevant. You can also search
for hashtags, social media handles, you might search for other topic tags that you might
not be able to find during the setup process. These are all creating the unique experience.
We also have the ability to choose from the web. If you go to share.flipboard.com, there
are bookmarks things you can drag to your browser.
When you have an article open and you want to add it to your magazine, just click on
it in your given the options to edit to your magazine or create a new magazine.
When I found an article, I could choose a magzine I wanted to flip it into. The image
on the right is the cover of a magazine. The US capital has created a couple of different
magazines such as capital dome. Is amazing with a lot of pictures and historic information
about what we're doing. It is very targeted, niche information, very interesting and visual.
Once you create a magazine, give it a touch to the title, it will ask for a title and
description, the clearer the better. You'll be surprised by the people who will be interested
by that. It's very difficult for people if it is too broad a topic to really understand
the concept of your new magazine. Also choose one of the images that is in your
magazine to make it the cover of this magazine. The picture you see here was actually a picture
from a magazine. Then of course, share and promote your magazine.
There are different ways to promote your magazine. The best way is to: interested people. It
might be more engaging on your website because it provides a different take on that same
content. It also presents in a visual way. Also, you
can add a Flipboard logo that links to the profile for your magazine to your social icons
on your websites. This is what some of our publishers have done.
These include brands, individual agencies, individuals, etc. etc.
I am going to jump to my iPad and it the get started button.
I am not going to spend too much time setting this up during this presentation. But I will
at least try to pick some relevant projects about the government. Let's do education[pause]
, Business etc. I will also include my name. I will include my email address. If you want
to write this down, my address is Carolyn Carolyn@flipboard.com. You can feel free to
reach out to me. Then you just need to set a password.
Okay. Now I am all login. Everything that you follow helps to promote your cover story.
This cover story contains content from all of the different things I just followed earlier.
It's a lot easier than carrying a magazine around.
These are some of the different topics that I followed. This is a [Indiscernible word]
of information, the latest news. If you're looking for a quick update on information,
[Indiscernible - speaker muffled] these of random things that are very popular. Some
of them are important to our company blog. Then I want to show you the website where
you can focus on other topics. There was a news section and you can see some publishers
like time. Here are other areas that you can choose to click on or you can choose to follow.
Here is your profile. It goes in the upper right-hand corner. You can see that I logged
in with a random username. Be sure to check that something that will be important so people
can find you easily. There is everything I filed. As soon as I
start looking at the contents [Indiscernible - speaker muffled]
I wanted to show you search bar here. If I looked at social network results, I would
find this. I can see the follow line. I am not following them on twitter. You could then
flip concept from this. Don out -- down on the bottom left and bottom
right, if you were to click on any one of those, let's see what they have in common.
I just made a new magazine and I can say it is called digitalgov test. You can invite
contributors to your magazine. Another example of what we do -- the host of the show is also
contributing to the magazine. They can also put it on the cover of the magazine.
I will show you what that magazine looks like in a second.
Let's take a few seconds to find a couple more contents and add that.
Now if you go to the magazine, you can see the cover over here. You can see the three
stories that we added. I would recommend have at least 20, 30, 40
pieces of content before you share. Because it’s allows for better user experiences.
The bottom left-hand corner, you see the little share icon. If I click on that, it asks if
I want to share that. To see the flip it link? That is unique to this magazine. You can use
this to link to social media. I don't want to take up too much more time
at that is the basic of what it is about. Here is Flipboard.com. This is the website.
This will give you an idea of what it looks like on the web. To go to my profile, it's
in the right hand corner at the top. In here are all my magazine.
If I click edit on the cover of the magazine, here are all the things in the content. I
can choose to make my magazine public or private. I can invite contributors here. I can also
get statistics. [Indiscernible - speaker muffled] the statistics
are something we up improving on all the time. On the cover of your magazine, it can actually
show you some statistics in terms of readers, followers, something like that.
Viewers, articles, also show up. I can put them in another magazine and have
it shared. Want to allow time for questions. But that
is a general overview of the product. Carolyn, I have a question. First of all,
in my business, in politics, we have a magazine called "baby animal".
Great. One of those covers, we saw the cover in motion
can you touch on that? How ever you choose to pronounce that, they
are available and work very well. If you create your own that you would like to use, usually
videos play very well. [Indiscernible - speaker muffled]
The book marker I was talking about earlier, if you want to add the flip board book marker
to your magazine, you can add a widget. I highly recommend getting the book marker.
We also have and optimistic content coming out on how to create and tips on how to do
stuff. Now I will open it up for questions.
?. Everyone's thinking how we can use Flipboard
and it is great to see their examples. Carolyn, you brought up a great point that
government employees are offered a new and shiny thing and it is good to think of how
much extra effort it will take. I appreciate your feedback on that. You also mentioned
you are creating a viral loop. One thing I think is unique about Flipboard
is this is not about creating content. You don't have to create content for your magazine.
You can share things that have already been created. You are just choosing a unique perspective
for this magazine. On the cover of the magazine, there is a little pencil where you can add
a question to your magazine or post a comment. That was one of the questions that came up.
This is compile already published content into the magazine. And the answer is yes.
We have more questions until to a clock p.m. until to 2 o’clock p.m.
How do you take a real magazine published why the government and get it out.
As long as you content has a link we can get that content from, you can use it in your
magazine. It has to live somewhere in order for us to go and retrieve it and put it in
our magazine. PDFs don't work well. It has to be somewhere on a website in order for
it to be typical and included in the magazine. You can embed YouTube videos in it as well?
Yes. It's the same process like the video I showed earlier. Let me pull that up real
fast and I'll show you how to do that. I would open this in a video. Here is the
flip it button. This is the bookmark I was talking about earlier. I can add that to the
magazine. It's a couple of extra steps but as long as
you have the bookmark and the flip it link, you can access the content.
Can you invite other forms of media content such as surveys?
Yes and no. As long as the survey links somewhere, it would link to that specific page. There
a couple of different ways to add web content to your clipboard.
It is tabulated they can sell ads within the space. The content will either open up into
[Indiscernible word] or web view. If you have a survey on your website, and you are set
for web view, someone can click on that and see it on your website. It would look great
in the magazine. [Indiscernible - low volume] Great. Is there any information on the demographics,
age, gender, etc.? So the agency can specifically target that market.
There isn't specific content information or demographics for you. What it is about 50/50
male-female. A little bit more male. Audiences have been typically highly educated. I will
be happy to get more of that information. I don't have them offhand, feel free to follow
up with me directly. You showed the resources at the end we can
include that also. Yes again.
[No audio] We have a lot of questions. Are the analytics you have able to be integrated
with the analytics tool text No, We are integrated separately. Those analytics
are just very specific to your magazines. Does a government agency have to create an
account can you publish a magazine with your personal account?
It depends on which agency how they want to handle it. Let's take CNN for example. They
have a CNN profile. A lot of this shows in individuals have individual magazines.
I would suggest having a brand for the agency but then an appropriate individual also have
an account. Not multiple people log into one account. So the brand is happening from the
agency level but the magazine can happen on an individual profile level. It represents
the agency well, represents the brand well. Could you repeat your question?
It was about setting up the accounts and if the agency should have their individual people.
I would suggest the agency set up the accounts with individual contributors.
I think the RNC which is not political, sets it up that way. Speaker of the hill have agencies
for Banenr using an individual account. If you have a big organization and content is
coming from different points, it totally makes sense to empower multiple people to contribute
to the magazine. Question that always comes up is what was
the biggest lesson that you learned specifically for the government?
Don’t just hope and pray that it gets found and we manage many platforms. We have different
reasons for communicating on that platform. You use people on your email list -- they
need to know that there are more optimal ways to contact the agency.
If you have a magazine, you can look it up at your leisure -- using the hashtag.
Many people when they create a magazine, we do hope to bring this to the audience but
it doesn't necessarily always happened. We use it as a vehicle to create and curate and
share the content with the followers. [No audio]
We have to be willing to put some [Indiscernible word] behind it.
Carolyn, I think you cut out. Not necessarily just what is on your blog.
What is the unique take to bring people in and make them aware of the issues you're working
on. I mentioned we used our social networks to
promote the government Flipboard . Bring the audience into the new world with us.
The medium content looks great on the -- Flipboard. A unique to way to raise awareness.
Also, this -- if you would like to respond to any questions that we have -- [Indiscernible
- speaker muffled] -- other than that, we found that Flipboard is a great network.
Absolutely. People have to know about it. I think those are both great points. Sharing
among other tools is helpful to know too. Karen, how can we find your click -- Flipboard
magazines? Cameron, it looks like you are on mute.
[No audio] Carolyn?
Carolyn, I think you may be on mute. [No audio]
Can you hear me? We can now.
Sorry about that. You think our Internet would work, right? [laughter] What was the question?
How can we find your Flipboard magazine? [ audio cutting in and out ]
Know what -- I don't know if you can still hear me.
The question is how can we find your Flipboard magazine?
For those questions that we don't get to, we will circulate the answer to the questions
we did get to. What if the user does not have a trend word
account. -- Flipboard account ? We seem to be having problems. If I make a
magazine and put the link on my website, can only people with a Flipboard account with
the magazine ? No. Because you have a web product, you don't
have to have an app. It can be opened in web view.
Just tell people to click on the link to go to your magazine.
In the statistics section, are you able to see how many people shared?
The only thing that we can see currently is more in the notification section. You could
start to get a sense of who likes the comments in that area but there is no aggregate total
of those to date as of yet. You mentioned -- is a limit to how many people
can share the magazines? Can I provided for everyone in my company?
That is a great question. Anyone to share that private magazine would have to be a contributor
to the magazine. Therefore, you just give them the ability to create the content as
well. You cannot just share a private magazine. That limits a little bit of use in most cases.
But what was the other part of that question? I lost it.
Even if it’s a private magazine, you are collaborating on that magazine. The good thing
to know is that even though it a private magazine, you are collaborating on that private magazine.
There is a very high number -- if you're talking about an agency, it could reach that number
will have to research to confirm what that is.
Kristen has a question. On honestly not sure how good would store the content. And that
include included? I don’t think that will work. If you are
then posting that content on your own -- if there is no link anywhere, I don't think so.
But if you are linking out to different things, you could include a link for your posting
into the magazine. It could be support material. But it could be an additional reading that
you could link to your newsletter. That makes sense.
Jason from the department of defense on it -- is there any information [Indiscernible
word] It's not necessary because I can and sure
your content looks good if we work closely. I am happy to work with people to ensure that
your content looks great Last question from Carolyn. Is there alive
– what if some external magazine post something that is questionable?
Because you are linking to an individual story or item, you have the option to flip that
content or not. I do think that is something to be aware of and talk with us. Also know
that we can delete something from the magazine including an individual story
Hopefully he won't run into any issues but it's definitely something to keep in to consideration.
You can always unflip some things. not a big deal.
That is questions we have. Thank you for presenting to us today. Will send out a follow-up email
with a survey valuation and a link to the resources that Carolyn and Caleb mentioned,
any last things to mention? P thank you so much. Feel free to reach out
and asked more questions. Feel free to ask for help on your magazine and also to answer
questions that you might have. We would be happy to work with you.
Thank you everyone for attending and have a good afternoon.
Thank you. Thank you.[Event concluded]
