My name is Rob Kennedy, I graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree in 1978 and
today I’m President and Co-CEO of C-SPAN in Washington D.C. C-SPAN is a non-profit
organization funded by the cable television industry dedicated to covering on television
public affairs events coming out of Washington D.C. I never really worked as an engineer
– I don’t have any patients; but, what I picked up here is not only a good understanding
for technology, which has helped me throughout my career in both cable and then working at
C-SPAN but also a method of analyzing problems, of thinking about problems, of thinking from
beginning from end and determining solutions that take various factors into account. I
call it an engineer’s mindset, I think – that you can look at a problem, break it into pieces,
form teams to work with the problem, and move things forward. Well this world revolves around
technology – technology is advancing at a rapid pace - a lot of that technology is
in the electrical, electronic and computer fields. It’s changing so many things about
our world. The pace is so rapid, I think it’d be a fascinating place to be learning right
now and learning about new technologies and then applying those to making people’s lives
better. Illinois is a tremendous environment for learning – there’s a rich history
of achievement and innovation and development the growth on campus since I’ve been here
is truly amazing but all of that growth has a purpose – there’s so many different
technical fields that are represented here - there’s so many projects – I’ve just
been learning about them during my visit to campus now – so many projects dealing with
complex technical problems that I think it’d be a tremendous place to go for academic reasons
and it’s a fun place too – There’s great school spirit. Champaign-Urbana is just a
great place to live and to go to school.
