Living the High Life With the Millionaireís Concierge
Transcription of interview with Doug Turner interview on November 7, 2011
Douglas Goldstein, CFPÆ, Financial Planner & Investment Advisor
Doug Turner founded the Millionaires Concierge in 1996. He puts together programs for people
with a wide variety of interests, whether itís being on a private yacht, taking a Learjet,
or even going on a fighter jet.
Douglas Goldstein, financial planner & investment advisor, interviewed Turner on Arutz Sheva
Radio.
Douglas Goldstein: What gave you the idea to set up the Millionaireís Concierge?
Doug Turner: This happened back in the mid-80s and early 90s when I was in the exotic car
business. The business was called the Auto Toy Store, and we are the largest in the world
with the exotic cars like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Mercedes, Porsche, Bentley,
and Rolls-Royce. People would come here to Fort Lauderdale, and thatís where I started
out. The showroom was on Sunrise Boulevard and they would come in to buy a $300,000 car,
but they would also want to know where to go to dinner or what hotel to stay in, or
they would like to get a boat, a limo or a plane to the Bahamas. I just had all the contacts
because the Toy Store was like a landmark to anybody who was there. I had all the connections
to get all of these different things so I would help them to do it. I was doing it for
free and I wasnít charging them, but they were buying a very special exotic car.
In 1996, my mom said why donít I start a business, and we came up with the name ìMillionaireís
Concierge.î We planned it, and then I got on shows such as Oprah Winfrey, and the rest
is history. Iíve done 26 shows around the world now, itís really something, and Oprah
put it basically as being the yellow pages for the rich and famous.
Douglas Goldstein: For people who are living large especially in times of economic distress
like weíre in now, is this thing reasonable?
Doug Turner: To the people who have said that and asked me that, thereís a lot of money
out there. Thereís a lot of wealth out there. Thereís a big niche for services like mine
and a lot of the things I have nobody else can offer you, you canít Google it. I have
a lot of once in a lifetime experiences, but thereís still a lot of money out there. Thereís
a lot of new money coming out. There are a lot of new businesses coming out, a lot of
new technology, and a lot of new wealth. Itís like starting all over again.
Douglas Goldstein: What are some of the special things that you do that other people canít
find?
Doug Turner: For example, one of the most popular things is a fighter jet flight. We
have the only two locations in the country, in Tampa, Florida, and Chino, California.
You have an option of a 30-minute flight or a one-hour flight. Also included in it is
a 30-minute pre-briefing, a DVD of the flight riding your cockpit, and the pilot that lets
you fly the jet. Youíre doing barrel rolls at 650 miles an hour. Thatís in a lot of
peopleís bucket lists and itís a tough thing to be able to find anywhere.
Douglas Goldstein: What kind of fighter jet?
Doug Turner: Itís an L-39 Albatros Russian Fighter jet. Itís really something. When
he fires that thing up, it is a 4000-pound rush that makes your hair stand up.
Douglas Goldstein: And they do barrel rolls and flip upside down?
Doug Turner: You can go on my site, www.millionairesconcierge.com, and thereís a great video of it. You canít
put any words on that experience. Itís just the ultimate rush, itís what it is. I had
a 71-year-old lady who went three times - unbelievable. Itís got the ejection seat, you suit up,
youíve got the helmet on, youíre talking back and forth to the pilot, and thereís
nothing like it. You get a DVD with the flight, and I watch all the DVDs before I send them
to the people and all I see is their teeth because all they are doing is smiling.
The only thing we can really get you on, the best thing in the United States, is an L3.
Itís like a smaller F16. Itís just not quite as fast. Iíve never had anybody complain.
I tell everybody with that experience, if you donít love it, Iíll give you all your
money back. Who does that in this world?
Douglas Goldstein: What are the top things that people like doing?
Doug Turner: I do a lot of work with Hollywood, red carpet events, movie premieres, sold out
tickets. When you canít get it, thatís when people come to me. Last week, I did a set
visit of the show Glee, which is a very popular show. I did two separate set visits for a
family of eight. Now for another one, Iím doing a walk-on role so he can play a role
on Glee, a non-speaking role. So thatís coming up. I do a lot of that.
Any of the talk shows - Ellen, Jay Leno, and all that. I have all the talk shows where
I can get you into the audience. The red carpet events, Golden Globes, the American Music
awards coming up, you got the country music awards coming up, American Idol tickets, X-Factor
tickets, you name the show on TV, I have it.
Concerts - if you want to sit in the front, we do a lot of main grids backstage of the
concerts with all the famous singers. We have celebrities for hire. If you want to have
lunch with a celebrity, we can do that. I just hired Donald Trump not long ago for $15,000
for five minutes. Youíll be surprised how wacky people are and what theyíll spend money
on that really doesnít make sense.
Douglas Goldstein: The people you are working with are obviously people who have money,
and youíve spoken with them. Is there any trend or any sort of similarity that you see?
Doug Turner: With me, I saw a niche, I saw an opportunity. I was doing this for years
before, when I laid the foundation. I did the ground work, and I was doing it without
even charging for it. Then you really knew you had something. First it is just diving
into something and dumping money into something and taking a long shot. I knew I had something.
I knew I had a corner to niche and thatís what I love to do. I love what I do and thatís
the key.
I never say I have a job. I never call at work. I donít even like saying Iím going
back to the office because this is not a job - this is an adventure. Everything I do is
fun. I sell fun. I donít sell health insurance. Iím not selling car insurance. You got to
find that niche which you love and youíve got to go for it. Like I said, I tested it
for many years and knew I had a winner and here I am 17 years later. Iím not a doctor
or a dentist. I didnít do really well in high school. As a matter of fact, I just came
back from my 30th class reunion. A lot of successful people didnít do well in school
and they go and find the niche and they go for it. Look at some of these guys, itís
amazing.
Douglas Goldstein: Who
would be your ideal client?
Doug Turner: I deal with a lot of CEOs of companies. I deal with some celebrities. My
ideal clients are successful people. Like you just said, if you start something just
like it, you probably wonít make it, but if you would start something and love it,
the chances are, you will make it because youíll make it work. When you love something,
you make it work. Thereís a big difference between liking and loving, especially with
creating your own niche business. Like I tell everybody, you only live once, and youíll
be dead a long time, so have fun. Thereís nothing like it.
We are all over the world, www.millionairesconcierge.com, 1-888-SIX-STAR. We cater all over the world,
New York, Aspen, Las Vegas, LA, Bahamas, and South Florida. We take care of Europe through
special services. We have clients from all over the world. Iím up in the middle of the
night working also. I answer the phone 24/7.
Douglas Goldstein: On the website, you talked about 007 Missions. Can you just tell me,
what does that mean?
Doug Turner: I name a few of my pretty women packages on there also, but 007 Mission is
just like the movie. In Miami, we have a limousine pick you up and bring you to our bell jet
ranger helicopter. We give you a quick tour of South Beach Miami and then we go out to
the Everglades. You land on the Everglades right next to your own high performance airboat.
You jump in the airboat for an hour and go through the Everglades infested with millions
of alligators, cougars, deer, and wild birds, and itís just amazing. Then itís back to
the helicopter, and real quick the guy wrestles an alligator, which is the craziest thing
Iíve ever seen. Then itís back to the helicopter, and back to the airport. At the airport, you
jump in a 300 LX stunt plane, which is what you see at the air shows that blows out white
smoke, and you go up in a stunt plane, and you can pull up the 9Gs. Then after that,
itís back in a limo to Miami Marina, and then you jump into 35-foot race boat for a
2-hour boat race. The adrenaline rush is really incredible. Then after that, itís back in
the limo and to wherever you started from.
I have a lot of trips like that, which are all limousine pickups and drop offs so that
you never have to worry about how to get there. Thatís a hell of a trip though. Just like
the movie, James Bond 007. Thatís one of many. Remember you only live once, and youíll
be dead a long time, so good luck Ö
