[Vladimir Petrosyan]
>> Hello, my name is Vladimir Petrosyan and I graduated from Sacramento State in 2011.
I was born in Armenia, which was part of Soviet Union at the time. There was a local war between
Armenia and Azerbaijan so the village my family lived
in was right between the two armies, so we had to run away and we moved to Russia. In
2005, we got an opportunity to move to the United States. The language, the
culture, the lack of friends was very tough for me at the beginning and I learned English
relatively fast. I got more comfortable here, I really started appreciating the United States
more and more. After that, I just decided that I need to go to the college.
I studied Business Administration with concentrations in Finance. So, I applied for IBM, Microsoft
and Intel and I got a response from Microsoft within a week, so I
went there and I think they liked me and they just gave me an offer within a week. It was
a good match for me and I accepted the offer and now I'm there. I really never lived on
my own before, so it was really difficult to actually move there, but when
I moved there, I realized that this might be a really good opportunity for me to learn
how to be independent. Everything that I do at Microsoft is great. I'm learning a lot.
My team itself, they are really good, they are very intellegent, very smart and I am
able to learn a lot from them. One of the biggest things I liked about the professors,
[cell phone rings] my bad, sorry, I forgot about turning it off. This is the first generation
Windows phone by HTC, it's called the HT7. This actually runs the Windows phone 7.5,
which is Mango. This is the latest version of it and I hope maybe one day
you guys can all try it. One of the things that Sacramento State teaches us all is to
follow your passion. In almost every Business class in Sacramento State actually has group
projects that kind of teaches us and prepares us for the world where we'll have
to work in teams with other people. The professors we have at Sac State are very knowledgeable
academically. A lot of them had the work experience itself, which
I think is even more important for us because they really do know what happens in the business
world. I don't think I'll be person I am right now without the Honors Program. The director
of the Honors Program, Dr. Pomo, really influenced me as a person.
Very talented students who were my friends and became my family, actually. I do work,
I do pay taxes, so I guess that's good for our economy and I try to do some
shopping online, which we're told that's help our economy, so I hope I do. I'm a strong
believer in education, myself. Going to college, learning, opens a lot of doors for you. I'm
really glad I actually went here because the education it provides for the
money you actually pay, it's tremendous. I'm Vladimir Petrosyan and I was made at Sac State.
