Hi. I'm john smith on the director for the occupational medicine program physical therapy and the compliance
officer at Valley Hospital and I got my MBA at Eastern.
I wasn't your traditional students. I went to the military. I got out. I didn't really
know what I wanted to do so has started plinking away classes at Spokane Community College.
I got my criminal justice degree at SCC and was soon picked up on the police department.
I was there for about three years before i was laid off, decided at that time I need to go back
and pursue Eastern for my business degree and it made sense at that time for me to go right
into my masters in business.
You know I had a lot going on in my life
Just having a ten, eleven, twelve year old at that time
and trying to balance his soccer schedule and my wife's going to school at
the same time and then she started, she was graduating so she's trying to get a job.
I've never felt like I had to prioritize my MBA over my family.
There had to be a balanced there and I had to use every free moment i had to study
and the rest of it was spent with my family.
I was able to get a grad student assistantship
with the business the college of business there and I was able to work
at the college during the day and able to go to classes at night and that was what was
most appealing because I still needed to have an income
and still be able to go to classes at night and still be able to
be with my family whenever I could.
That assistantship was really helpful because I was able to do some research with the professors.
I was able to get to know them one-on-one. I felt like I got some really good relationships
out of doing that assistantship as well as getting some financial assistance as well.
I worked exclusively at Valley Hospital for about forty hours a week and went to class at night,
and took on multiple projects for them.
It led to my job now and I can't encourage a student out there enough
to get an internship,
putting in the free hours, put in that time because that's going to be able to shine,
that's going to be on the show them
the concepts and the theory that you're learning and how you can apply that.
