Here we are in Monument Valley
Seriously, we're at the Oklahoma/Kansas border.
We're heading north
towards a nice Cumulus Congestus.
It could set up quite quickly today.
BACK TO BASICS
It's falling apart...
Yeah but some storms will extend to the north.
Anyway, this cell is gonna blow everything out
so we should get it right now
We go there to get it
then it may begin to spin
So the dryline is coming from the West
We're gonna aim at this big cell by driving towards south.
We'll try to go through this hole and then to go in towards west.
We were trying to catch up with this tornado warned cell
It was quite interesting
Some clouds were getting quite low
We thought it could produce something
Unfortunately, it was not an easy area
because there weren't many paved roads.
I was behind the wheel this day
At some point, there's a road going down on the left.
I take it a bit too fast
before understanding that we cannot go further.
So we stop
We try to back up...
but it doesn't work.
Even while going slow, the car slides towards the ditch.
What do we do now? Is the chase already over?
Are we going to spend the night in the middle of nowhere?
If ever a wheel goes on the ditch, we're screwed!
We'll never be able to get out.
We have to push the car from this side!
Everybody pushes from the ditch.
We slowly go backwards.
We go through the 5 muddy yards
then we manage to reach the intersection.
It's OK... we won't spend the night on a trail, looking at the stars.
So guys... what do you think of dirt roads?
I'd rather say "thank you" for having stuck us in the mud !
What do we do now? Is the chase already over?
THE ANSWER IS YES.
The shear is quite interesting in the area.
Friday, May 20th.
Heading for south-western Kansas
Storms are expected along the dryline.
Heading for Greensburg
A city that had been completely destroy
by a very powerful tornado in 2007.
We can see that rebuilding is on the way.
It's reassuring to see that people manage to live with tornadoes
to get on with life and start all over.
The idea was to start from this area
and wait for the convection to begin.
Today is a rest day!
The least miles, the more storms.
When we got there, the first cells began quickly
and didn't move fast.
This way we can easily watch what's going on
Cells progressively formed further south
so it was about time to go and get them
And this is the one !
Wall-cloud... stormchasers everywhere...
THIS is a good-looking base !
We chase this storm while it moves towards north-east
As the day goes by, it expands towards south
and it gets tougher with nice structures.
Many storm chasers gather around the same cells.
And we keep going back south where storms still form
We head for the third cell of the day.
which gets more and more interesting in the evening.
I look at the radar and
and it feels very good
because there's no rain
There is a huge base, which is quite a good sign.
I'm loving it !
A wonderful chaotic sky... orange, blue...
Amazing tints
We saw the full range of colors.
Storm chasers are on the case.
We play with the cells and the rain curtains
to get as close as we can and have the best atmospheres.
Oh ! The back of the storm !
A great day in the end.
It was one of the best bit from the beginning of our journey.
Not a single tornado
but a truly gorgeous sky that is worth it as well.
NEXT EPISODE
There is a developing tornado here !
