Mary Lou: Well, I think it’s friendly because every delivery person has been great.
The gal on the phone is great. And it’s like your friends after a while.
Lee: It’s really about respect and dignity for the seniors, to keep them in their homes, keep them independent.
You know, it’s what everybody wants.
Betty: It’s a blessing from God, I believe because you just can’t make it on your own.
Mary Jo: Store to Door is an extraordinary organization. All that we do is help elderly adults stay independent
by getting them groceries, by shopping for them and bringing groceries directly into their home.
Last fiscal year, we delivered 16,500 orders, and we helped about 1,300 home-bound elderly get groceries into their homes.
Peg: I lay out the orders and forms for the volunteers to sign in. And then they start shopping, and they shop each order.
And when it comes back, we double check it.
Peg (background): Okay, A and W rootbeer, two liters.
Peg: And when we’re done with all of that and all the phone calls to make sure we’ve got the right items and the corrections,
then it goes through the belt. And the drivers take it and send it back to the customer.
Mary Jo: We work in five different Cub food stores, and they’re located around the metro area
in sort of geographic dispersion so that we can cover the whole seven-county area with deliveries.
It’s a really big deal for an elderly person to decide they aren’t going to go out and touch their own oranges,
and we take that pretty seriously. For someone to realize they cannot get to the grocery store
is very similar to the “giving up the keys” conversation that people often have
with aging adults, aging parents and neighbors.
Bob (background): Store to Door.
Arelene: Bob is so good about looking over my agenda (laughs), my list that I have.
And he knows what I want. And he’ll see that it’s there.
Lee: I have attempted to rope a few friends in because we need more volunteers.
And again, I think it’s an easy rewarding thing to do for somebody, to just do a little something to give back.
