The dispute over the Wellington waka Te Raukura
could be headed back to court with Waiwhetu Maori saying
they have not signed an agreement that would let them keep the canoe
in return for a $150,000 payment to Wellington City Council.
The Waiwhetu group instead want a deal
that would see shared guardianship of Te Raukura
and allow it to be displayed in the waterfront's custom-built wharewaka.
But the council insists a decision
made by a majority of councillors on April 20,
which gave Maori 28 days to front up with the cash,
is a binding agreement.
The council says they have authority over the canoe Te Raukura,
that's incorrect.
It was Tahu Parae who first floated the idea to build a waka.
We agreed and here we have our Wellington waka.
