It’s wonderful that the DOE [US Department of Energy] has started with the disposal of
the cold war waste materials, but it’s a different game with spent fuel and other types
of high level waste. Because of the high specific activity, the waste generates significant
amounts of heat, so that the storage containers get hot.
Because of this heat generation, salt domes are not favored, because the heat will lead
to accelerated corrosion of the waste containers.
The plan in the United States is to dispose of high level waste at Yucca Mountain in Nevada.
This plan has not met with universal approval.
