Hello, I'm Sarah Norris from Wilmington, North Carolina at Total Childcare Center. Today
we're going to talk about childcare worker restrictions. The field of childcare is often
... People that work within the childcare field, they've often been referred to as "babysitters,"
and we're far more than babysitters. We should not think of ourselves as babysitters; we
are teachers, we are professionals, and within that comes a gamut of things that we need
to do and some of things that we should not be doing. As professionals, we do sincerely
love children, and that's important. However, it's important that we not become totally
involved with one child. We need to help that child and we need to help that parent. But
we don't need to become the parent of that child. We are a teacher, we are a professional
that is helping a child along their educational and developmental growth pattern. We need
to be careful about talking about children with others, even including family members.
Confidentiality is very, very important in the field of childcare. You can get into lots
of problems by sharing confidentiality with even family members, and so we have to be
professional and not share confidentialities about children. We have to be professional
within our own teaching staff, that we do not share too much about a child or we do
not put a child down. Certainly that applies to within the classroom also, that we build
a child up and we use positive reinforcement. The other thing is that we would follow very
closely discipline policy of the center, and be sure that we are not disciplining the child
in any way that would be against what the discipline policy says. So we've talked a
little bit about some restrictions that apply to childcare workers, being a professional
and acting in a professional way is very important in the field of childcare for teachers.
