Approximately 8 million registered voters live in Ohio and every one of their votes matter.
Don't believe it?
Since 2013, 199 elections have been decided by one vote or tied.
The law in Ohio states that a tied election must be broken by lot.
That means that the methods for breaking a tie includes but are not limited to:
flipping a coin,
drawing straws,
picking a name out of a hat
or cutting cards.
Your County Board of Elections decides which method to use,
and they have the freedom to get as creative as they want,
as long as the winner is decided by random chance.
So the next time you wonder if your voice really matters,
remember the elections that have been decided by a single vote or tied.
Just ask the City of Kenton Mayor who won his primary election by a single vote,
or the East Liverpool City Council Member who had his name drawn out of a basket.
Make sure you're an active participant in our democracy.
