Whether you are gay, straight, lesbian, bisexual, trensgender,
you have a great purpose in this world
don't let anyone tell you that any differently.
You might have to bleep some of this out!
-Is that what you want, honey? -Yeah.
Why do you think bullying exists?
I hope this relates. Anyway, here we go.
I mean, I think it just has to do with personal insecurities
Insecurities
Insecurity
Bullying comes from insecurity and fear.
Ignorance and intolerance
Someone who's a lot more insecure and sad and has a lot more hate built up inside them than--than you do.
Why do you think bullying exists?
That's a really good question, I'm not really sure why.
I think it's--um--impowerment
What do I want to say to a bully? Hmm.
Why do you need to do that? What inside yourself is hurting so deeply that you feel the need to make others feel so awful?
You're being afraid of something you don't understand.
So who really is the strong one?
It's so easy to be mean and ruthless. Don't give into that.
Whether it be in court, or within your family, or within your peer group, your friends, um--
You'll lose.
I mean there's--there's an instinct to beat the crap out of them, at one point, but then that's the same thing.
It doesn't take talent, it doesn't take anything to be a bully.
But to stand up to bullies.
I got so despondent over my situation that I considered suicide briefly as a teenager.
We get very superhero about it. As though that's the thing we have to suck up and we have to make sure nobody knows.
That's a thing people have to know.
If you're being harassed or abused or threatened, if you're afraid that you may not be able to do it, then don't do it alone.
Unless we are literally--one is literally an island--
Then nobody does it alone. No one that has come before you, no one that has come after you.
By the time I got to high school, everything started to turn better. And by college it was wonderful, and then in the real world, sensational.
And then, you get out and realize there's so much more and there's so much to experience and so much life to live.
My life has just got so much better since then. It's--my orientation is a non-issue. It's just part--it's just a fragment of a fragment of who I am.
We were in the drama club, we were always looked down upon, and made fun of.
And now I get paid a lot of money to do it! When I do my job, people applaud me.
I'm living proof it gets better.
Their opinion does not matter. No one's opinion matters more than yours.
Hang on to yourself in the--in the face of this ignorance.
Stand tall, be proud, and fight for what you believe in.
You have to have faith that there are people out there, like you.
There's just--there's so much more.
The message today is that you are not alone.
Don't go it alone.
Reach out, don't go it alone.
And I want these kids to know that the video--this video--is full of people who don't know you and who love you
And who want you to survive. So I promise, it gets better. I love you.
It gets better.
It gets better.
It does get better.
It gets better.
It gets better.
I can do it better on the left.
It gets better.
It gets better.
It gets better
I promise.
