Thats just knife, isn't it?
Yes, cause you'll need a knife for that...
So ... it's all about...
... it's all about making a scurfs of birch bark, or cortex.
Something like these little ones i'm making here.
It's something like scurfs, or scobs... I don't know how to name it properly.
I'm going to make subs for this video, then upload it on youtube. You're going to be famous.
-just kidding, he's already famous, isn't he-
Now you can see them... they're like some wide noodles.
Btw, you don't have to make english subs...
So you just scrape birch bark like this.
When you think you're done...
You take a tinder-box,
it's pretty used.
And try to ignite bark with sparks.
Actually, i recommend to make more scurfs for easier ignition, but i made less because of my laziness.
It should be more scurfs of birch bark there definitely, but i just demonstrate the principle so these aren't accurate conditions
It should be ignited in a few seconds. My workshop presentation yeasterday was sligthly better.
It's almost done.
Right now, here is a problem, that almost all of the scurfs are burnt.
So this is a principle. You need to prepare a sufficient amount of birch bark's scurfs...
This is just example, which is little innacurate. You need better preparation of course. This was just quick show for your video.
But as i said. For me birch bark is the best choice for this, when you don't have dry grass around you.
It burns even when it's wet.
But key step is to make good preparation before igniting (sufficient amount of bark and it's scurfs, find best possible surface etc.). My example wasn't ideal in this way.
