"Hello, hi, the world, my name is Omairah S. Malawi, I'm from Eastern Visayas State
University in Tacloban, Leyte."
"Hello, My name is Rodrigo Balais"
"Hello, my name is Juvelyn Doldol."
"Hello people of America! My name is Joeboy Padayao"
"I am taking up Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, Majoring in Mathematics, I am studying
at Eastern Visayas State University."
These are the future teachers of the Philippines, students at the Eastern Visayas State University,
a campus which enrolls over 14,000 students in 50 degree programs. As a Peace Corps volunteer,
I work with these future educators, sharing interactive teaching methods and building
English skills. They are always enthusiastic and they know how important their work is
to the Philippines.
"As a teacher, it is the most...the noble profession which can help our future students
to have also a good future."
"We would be able to attain our dreams in life to have a better future and that we could
help that of younger generations."
But getting there isn't easy. College in the Philippines may seem inexpensive, enrollment
costs about $100 per semester--but many families earn less than that in an entire month.
"My family is not so rich. We don't have money to support my studies"
"Because there are a lot of students who are interested to go to school but their parents
can't afford to go to school."
"I have classmates whose parents are fish vendors. Whose father does...whose father
just stays at home, do not have a job. They live very far from the university that would...so
it is very expensive because they have to board, they have to, to spend for their fare
every day. And then I have also classmates whose mother is, is a, who sells newspaper,
who sells newspaper in Manila, but the money that, the money that, the profit that she
has is not enough to let her daughter go to school."
So these students suggested creating a scholarship. It's my job is to make their hope a reality.
Hence this scholarship for Future Educators. $100 can fund a student's tuition for the
semester. Our goal is to sponsor 30 scholars--the most deserving of the 800 students in the
College of Education. They are grateful for your help.
"...really say that God will always bless you that God will always be there to praise
and to glorify what would be the fruit of your labor."
