This is Vietcong: Purple Haze on the Playstation 2, it's a really crap first person shooter,
and it takes place in the Vietnam war. And on the back it says '19 missions in the single
player capaign, 2 new missions exclusive to console', 'Command an elite squad of special
forces troops for maximum tactical strategies', 'Utilise any means necessary to control key
enemy territory, gather intelligence, call in air strikes', 'Start a quick fight, play
as US or Vietcong soldier and jump straight into the action'. So I'm glad to be finally
reviewing this game, because it means after shooting this video I can put the game onto
ebay, I've been wanting to sell it for quite a while now cos like I said I think the game
is pretty crap. So on the manual it says 'Your essential guide to jungle warfare'. Let's
try and get it out. So there it talks about the war in Vietnam. And it talks about all
the weapons in the game as well, and it says 'All the weapons in Vietcong: Purple Haze
have been meticulously researched with the help of specialist magazines, military museum
archives and visits to the shooting range. Most authentic to the era pistols, revolvers,
rifles and shotguns have been recreated in order to get the right look and feel.' And
I think the guns in the game do look quite nice, and I do like the sound of the weapons
as well. Those are pretty much the only positive things that I can say about the game to be
honest. And there it talks about the drill camp, so it's just bascially a tutorial that
you can take part in in the game, but it's really boring to be honest, I mean the whole
game itself is pretty boring. And there it talks about your squad members, and, not sure
how well this will show up on camera, but he actually looks like Spock out of Star Trek.
And there it talks about your inventory. Hints and tips. Special forces glossary. And that's
about it. So yeah, let's take a look at this piece of crap on the playstation 2. So on
the menu you can choose between single player which is the main game and quick fight, and
with quick fight you just choose what map you wanna use, what weapons you wanna use,
whether you want to be a Vietcong soldier or a US soldier, and then you just jump straight
into the action, it kinda seems a bit pointless really. Before each mission you can choose
whatever weapon you wnat as well. Well actually you're kinda limited to your choice, you can
usually only choose between say two different handguns, and two different rifles or machine
guns or whatever. So you can control a squad in the game, the squad is always with you,
but the members in the squad, or the squad as a whole doesn't always do what you tell
it to do, it's kinda, it's kinda broken, like you might command them to stay where they
are, and, you know, you walk off somewhere, and then after a short while they might just
end up following you, or you might ask them to follow you, and then after a short while
for some reason they'll just all end up staying where they are. You've also got a pointman
as well, and he'll lead you the way and show you where to go, and he'll point out if there's
any *** traps or not, that doesn't really work that well either cos sometimes he'll
just kinda walk around in circles, or he may just... he moves really slowly as well, and
sometimes he might just stop and not go anywhere, so... Yeah, speaking of *** traps they do
come up quite often in the game on certain levels, they're basically wires and there's
like a bomb attacthed to one end of the wire, so if you walk through it you'll get blown
up, and the wires are obviously really hard to see, you're supposed to cut them with your
knife, but I've found that usually that doesn't work for some reason, you know, for some reason
he just wont cut it with his knife, so what I usually do is I'll just aim at the bomb
and I'll shoot at it and that usually get's rid of it. And I quite like the fact that
when bombs go off in this game, if they go off near to you hyou'll hear that ringing
sound that you would hear in your ears if it actually had happened for real. And yeah,
the sound in the game is pretty good, I do like the sound of the weapons, and those are
basically the only positive things to say about this game, there's a lot wrong with
the game to be honest. The main thing that ruins the game for me really is the aiming,
it's just so hard aiming at your enemy, you know, if the crosshair is kind of off to the
side and you need to just move it a little bit over to the left onto an enemy, if you
try just moving it slowly with the analogue stick it'll just suddenly shoot across the
screen, and you can't change the sensitivity of the movement of the crosshair in the options
menu either, so you've just got to try and move the analogue stick just a really little
tiny bit, and then the crosshair will start to move very slowly onto your enemy, but then
by the time you get it on your enemy, your enemy has shot you loads of times, and another
bad thing about this game is that when you're getting shot at your health goes down really
quickly. The graphics in the game are very basic for the PS2, pretty much each level
looks almost identical, I mean, you can't really expect them to be that different because
the game does take place in Vietnam in the jungle, but it would be nice if the levels
weren't too much the same, it almost feels as though you could be playing the same level
over and over again. So yeah, so as I said the graphics are very basic for the PS2, although
the way the guns look, they don't look too bad. Now as you can see I'm getting healed
by the medic here, you can either ask him to come over to you to heal you, or you can
just walk over to him, and when you touch him he'll heal you. The really frustrating
thing about that though is when you don't need to be healed, when you're in the middle
of a gunfight and you've only got a little bit of health lost, if you accidently bump
into the medic, or if he accidently bumps into you, he'll end up healing you, and while
he's healing you you can't move or anything, you're stuck, and when that happens often
it's really annoying. Another annoying thing is that often while you're trying to shoot
your enemy some of your team mates might run in front of you and get in the way. And yeah,
a lot of the time it can be quite difficult trying to spot your enemy, sometimes you're
just in the jungle, you're getting shot at and you're losing loads of health, and you
can't even see where your enemies are, cos there's a lot of shrubbery and greenery and
stuff, so it can be pretty damned hard to see them... that's not really a complaint,
I mean, you know, what do you expect when you're in the jungle, do you know what I mean?
If you run out of ammo you can get more ammo from a guy called Bronson, he's one of your
team mates, I think he's the engineer, but he wont be able to give you ammo for any Vietnamese
weapons. And a lot of the levels in this game are really short, they're over quite quickly,
and yeah apart from shooting people in the game, in the levels, the levels are very very
simple, you'll probably only have like one objective, and the objectives usually consist
of like say picking up a map, or it might be putting some C4 on some ammunition boxes.
So all in all the game does feel quite short, I can't remember how many missions there are,
bit like I said most of the missions themselves do seem very short. Okay there's one last
thing that I forgot to mention which I don't like about this game, and that is the movement
of the weapon in his hand while he's running, with certain weapons that he holds the movement
looks natural and normal, but with other weapons the movement just looks extremely odd, and
when you combine that with the way his foot steps sound as well while he's running, it
gives the impression that he's kind of skipping along if you know what I mean? It's just,
it's really weird and I idon't like it anyway. So yeah this is, it's a pretty bad game, it
does feel very broken, you know the only good thing about the game really is just basically
the sound of the wapons to be honest 'laughs'. So yeah, I definitely definitely would not
recommend this game at all, I mean maybe if there was no other first person shooters around
and this was the only first person shooter that existed, then I guess it would be pretty
good, but, there's so many other first person shooters that are available on the PS2, and
on the other consoles which are just way way better than this, so I definitely would not
recommend this game at all. So yeah, to sum it up, very very crap game. So, thanks for
watching.
