In honor of winning the 2011 NCAA Division II National Football Championship, both Tim
Beck and Dave Wiemers were selected to represent Pittsburg State University at Kauffman Stadium,
by throwing out the honorary first pitch and it was obvious they were both very excited
to have been selected. Dave Wiemers-“Oh well this is, this is so
cool. I’m a lifelong Royals fan so to get to do cool things like this because of a great
football season. You know these are special moments.”
Tim Beck-“Well we’re excited to be here. I mean it’s an awesome honor and we really
appreciate the opportunity to promote Pittsburg State University and just hopefully we can
make a clean throw here and get on with it.” Speaking about the pitch, head coach Tim Beck
would be making the first pitch while asst. head coach and defensive coordinator Dave
Wiemers would be catching that first pitch. For both coaches, I asked if they’ve been
spending countless hours practicing and warming up or if they’re just gonna go in cold.
Tim Beck-“My son is going into the 8th grade. He made me play a little catch with him yesterday
so other than that, that’s about it. So we’re going in pretty cold.”
Dave Wiemers-“No, not really. A lot of catch with an 11 year old at home, getting me ready.
He won’t throw as fast as my 11 year old so we’ll be okay.”
So after all the preparation and planning, the two finally made their way onto the field
and coach Beck was given the pitching signal of “Fire Away”
Announcer-“Ladies and gentlemen, joining us for tonight’s honorary first pitch, please
welcome, Pittsburg State University head football coach, Tim Beck, who guided the Gorillas to
a 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship. Catching for Coach Beck, the assistant head
coach and defensive coordinator, Dave Wiemers. Coach whenever you’re ready fire away. Thank
you Tim, Dave, and congratulations Pittsburg State University.”
