This is a very interesting time in the legislative process, and we’re seeing a lot of things
that are taking place this year and hearing criticisms of what’s going on from one party
to the other. The governor recently criticized the Democrats in the House of Representatives.
He’s criticized all of the people who have come here, the thousands of people, working
men and women, teachers, others who are concerned about their jobs and their ability to have
collective bargaining, which is a right of the people to have. And, at the same time,
he says that this is an attack on his agenda, and he says it’s wrong. But, if you look
at his agenda and the agenda of his party, it is exactly that. It’s an attack on the
working people of the state of Indiana. When you take away the rights to collectively bargain,
when you make it more difficult for us to fund the public school system in order to
have charter schools, virtual schools and vouchers for private schools and all of that
money coming from public education, that is an attack on the people of the state of Indiana,
and I think it’s very accurate. I hope that, throughout this process, we get some compromises,
some changes, so that we can in fact continue to have a good public education system in
this state as best we can afford under these economic times and, at the same time, assure
that working men and women have the right to collective bargain in this state.
