Father, here in Venezuela we have a lot of oil and -
Then you've got a lot of money, that's great -
Precisely. That wealth has brought us
a lot of material progress, but it has also created,
at least for part of the population, a sense of being well-off,
that life's a beach. And my question is,
how can we help our children to love to work?
I would take them for a little walk in the districts around
the great city of Caracas, covering their eyes with my hand,
and then I'd let them open their eyes
so they saw those shacks, one on top of the other.
Yes, Father.
And you've given them the answer.
They must learn that they need to put money to good use,
they need to share it, so that everyone in some way
can share in the wealth of this land.
Because it's very easy to say, "I'm very good, Iů"
I had a friend who once told me, "I don't know if I'm good,
because," - he had a lot of money -
I've never had my children weak with hunger,
penniless,
I've never had my children weak with hunger,
and myself out of work and penniless;
I've never lain on the street
without even a blanketů
I don't know if I'm good. OK, I'm honest,
but what would I have done if all that had happened?"
We have to try and stop it happening to anyone.
We have to provide training for people so that,
with their work, they can earn their living,
pay for sickness, old age, raise their children,
and all the other things they need. Thank you, Father.
