Hi, today i'm going to talk about the general special collections at the
University of Southern Mississippi
So we have, as far as books go, in special collections, we have de Grummond books
and we have mississippiana books, and then we had general special
collections. So basically this is going to be everything else in general special
collections.
So, in general special collections we have books going back to
the fifteenth century.
They're going to cover a variety of topics from history, to religion, to feminism.
The civil war for instance, in our civil war collections we have a ton
of books about Abraham Lincoln.
Going all the way back to the eighteen-sixties, up to the present
Then we're going to have books about different generals, regiments, as
well as books about the history of women in the civil war.
The southern version of Florence Nightingale is one particular book.
In our literature we're going to have literature about southern writers and also
contemporary writers and writers around the country,
including, we have a nineteen-seventy book from Yoko Ono, with an
introduction by John Lennon.
But then we also have, on the flip-side,
a serial book of Vanity Fair from the nineteenth century,
and oftentimes when books were published, they were published in volumes and separate
installments.
For instance Vanity Fair is three or four, I think it's four volumes long,
and we have all of those volumes.
With our religion books there's another video about the antiphoner and that is
a very large book.
It has music notation for monks to chant from during their daily services.
This is from the sixteenth century,
it's written on animal skin and it's really just a very cool, cool book.
Now, with our materials, not only in special collections but other collections
in general in all of the different areas,
You're not only focused on the subject matter of the books, but also on the
physicality of the materials. For instance some books may be really boring
and not really researchable
but they have a rare binding, for instance, one of our books is about
fishing, The Great Angler i what I think it's called
but the binding itself has little medallions from fishing and things on it, so the
value of the book increases not because the book's necessarily any good,
but because the binding itself is great.
So in the general special collections we do have a variety
of different materials. We have freedom to collect materials that come in on a
variety of different subjects
and I think we have a little bit here for everybody. Thanks.
