I don't know why we would see any great improvement
59 percent by the way could indentify all three stooges.
Now think about the three stooges
how old are those guys?
Frankly, I think they were a little before my time.
And yet oh all of a sudden
that has interest
What percentage do you think could name three
branches of government?
She said 25.
Well it was 41 percent so it was a little better.
Now what I'm going to show you in a minute is how
that civics and history knowledge
seem to decline over time.
Here's a test and I don't think I asked this question
I might have on the quiz.
What is the first right what's a guarantee?
You guys are not allowed to answer it.
More specific...more specific
It's the freedom to establish and practice religion
awe...when you drill down to the details
they don't know and only 1 and 50
college students could answer that correctly.
That's kind of sad
at least if they could say freedom of speech
they would be in the right ball park.
Okay, now here's a study from the
[National Accessment of Educational Progress in 2006]
They look at 4th graders, 8th graders and 12th graders
and they look at how many of these people,
how many of these people had below basic understanding
which means only particle mastery
at that grade level right.
Okay, the 4th graders only a little more than 30 percent
had below basic and the 8th graders
only like maybe 33 percent had below basic.
What happens to the 12th graders more than 50 percent
are below basic?
Now that, that question of the 3 branches of government
I know that in 4th and 5th grade my children
had that in their curriculum.
I also know that they have to take
government classes to get out out of high school
in the state of Illinois don't they?
How come this isn't being retained?
See I go back to my dad and how did he get it.
I don't know so they also can not identify
the reconstruction period, who the alias were
in World War II or the Cuban missile crisis.
All of these things happened before my time
I can tell you about all three of those periods
so I'm challenging I don't have all the answers here
but I'm challenging you to think in you're content area
what is it that there maybe some background knowledge
that we need to bring the students up to speed in.
Okay, in your opinion in your field
what must...what must individuals know
in order to act as responsibile citizens
and discerning comsumers name one thing that
students need to know just one that comes to mind
I'm sure there are many?
Be responsible citizens, and discerning consumers.
In my world they need to know
about security issues like that gmail thing
that I was just telling you about
if I'm teaching teachers to use technology
I need to expose them to some of the bad stuff too.
They need to be aware of that
what do they need in you're world
Marketing & Financing?
[audience member] -Unintelligible- [Susan Manning] Okay
[audience member] -Unintelligible-
[Susan Manning] How about in you're area?
[audience member] -Unintelligible- [Susan Manning] Okay
[Susan Manning] So they need to be able to differentiate alright.
How about in you're classes Donna?
[Donna] - Unintelligible-
[Susan Manning] Okay is that kind of like
think globally act locally?
[Donna ] - Unintelligible- [Susan Manning] Alright
the big question then is
did you teach that
is that part of you're curriculum
and is it, is it front and center?
if not then where can you fit that into
how your designing you're own instructions.
I think back to 5th grade with Mr. began with a [K]
ended in [ski] don't know the rest of the name.
He was my first teacher who ever introduced me
to current events and it really had a lasting impression
because I had to go find a current event
that related to whatever topic
he would give us a topic and then we had to read
the newspaper and scoured the sources
and talked to our parents and find something
to come in and report.
You know you can do that with college students it works.
Workplace skills...I don't remember
this statistics and I couldn't find it
but it was interesting to read in one of these sources
how many 12th grade students
felt that they were really well prepared in certain areas
but the future employers disagreed.
Especially know it was college level
it had to do with writing skills.
The college seniors felt that they were very proficient
but the future employers were reporting otherwise
that their experiences were very different.
What would you say are workplace skills
that you're future graduates need?
This I stoled this from...what okay punctuality yeah
communication skills, oral, written,
analytical skills.
[audience member] - Unintelligible-
[Susan Manning] More and more...and when you look at
how are world has changed
especially in the last ten years
if you can not continue learning
and you don't embrass the idea that something
knew is just around the corner
then your going to get stuck
and it's called unemployment right.
We all need to re-tool ourselves everyday
even though we have relatively secure jobs
that is part of what keeps us here.
So, I know that college students sometimes feel
that were lecturing to them when we say that.
But it really...I would think that they could see that
in some of their family backgound
that those who continue to learn
or those who continue to work.
[audience member] - unintelligible-
[Susan Manning] So is there a way to take that passion
and have them fit page 62 into it?
Can you have the best of both worlds?
[audience member] -Unintelligible-
[Susan Manning] Right...right
[audience member] -Unintelligible-
[Susan Manning] Well for me some of that comes back
to that, that concept of meaning helping them
understand what the mean is behind page 62
and why it is important that they know that
that also creates a sense of releventcy
that this is going to make sense in my life
it's not the page that I really want to be on
but if I can get this background knowledge
down then I can move on.
Just like my young musicians have to get their stuff
down so they can move on and become experts.
I've often use this psychology with my kids
especially when it comes to music.
Okay well if you were just going to do a lesson
let's say a days worth.
It should have okay well you might be surprised to know
that the cognitive scientist will tell you
there's know real edvidence that teaching to a variety
of learning styles makes for better learning...however.
