Hi, my name is Pat Goodwin with patgoodwinassociates.com and today we're going to talk about how to
complete a portfolio or how to develop a portfolio. I think a lot of people misunderstand that
a portfolio is typically for someone in the marketing field, design field, someone in
the fashion field, but if you begin to think about your personal portfolio, that would
be documentation during your entire career of awards, recognitions, special projects,
maybe things that you have actually developed that are not confidential that you could actually
take a copy of. So a portfolio would include your work, your life's work and you can put
that in a very nice three ring binder with plastic sleeves where its protected. You could
have in your portfolio letters of recommendation. You could always have in your portfolio your
resume, which would be in the beginning and then past your resume, which is in the beginning
of your portfolio, you would have your reference sheet. You would have then, samples of the
work which could include marketing materials that you've developed. It could include special
projects or it could include samples of something that you've written when you've given a speech.
If you're a technical writer, it could be samples of your technical writing skills.
If you are in the field of manufacturing or engineering, it could be that you could actually
show them the actual picture of something that you've been involved in manufacturing.
And so I would like to encourage everyone to think about as they go through their professional
career, to keep track of their accomplishments and keep in a special place, their items that
they have been recognized for, documentation of awards, recognition from companies and
letters of accommodation from customers that you might of received during your career.
And build your portfolio based on the work itself and you would be so proud to demonstrate
that when you go then for an interview or you want to show someone what you've done
in your career. And those are the basic components of building a portfolio.
