Narrator: The Center for engaged Leadership works in developing leaders and we bring
quality leaders from all over the country in to work with our different school
districts and today we're at
Lakeville public schools working with their administrative team and we've brought in Dr. Susan Huff
and Dr. Huff is a principal in Utah schools. She's been a
national award winner and she really does a lot of great work around helping
schools and administrators turn their districts and schools into professional
learning communities. So we sat down with Dr. Huff and we asked her a couple of questions.
Dr. Huff: Well as i thought about why i became a principal, I was
loving being a classroom teacher. One of my professors in the master program said
if you have certain talents and abilities you also have a responsibility
share those gifts with others.
And that made sense to me and that caused me to step up into the principalship.
And then as I thought about all of the things i've learned
being a principal now at three schools and helping schools transform as professional learning communites
I thought.. I can't really keep that to myself
and it's really the same kind of satisfaction
working with adult learners with principals that i had working with the
class of students. Helping a principal to change practice and transform
their practices impacts many many teachers and many students to ultimately
help student learning so thats what gives me that passion and zeal for this
work.
Narrator: So we had a great day in Lakeville schools with Dr. Huff. She really
brought home
the importance of keeping focused on student achievement and how it's
important that we expect all students to learn. She really worked with the
administrators on that focus and had aligned with the professional learning
community. And her advice and values is really instrumental in us
working in the institute and bringing that message home and so we'll be inviting her back
again next year to work with another school district
