SOT (Terry Birdwhistell): "When these presidents take office, change is under way. When President
McVey gave his inaugural address, World War I was raging in Europe. It had changed the
country, and it also changed this university. There was a feeling of patriotism, a feeling
of the practicality of education. We sometimes think of higher ed as some esoteric effort,
but it's also very practical. In today's world we hear it as economic development, but back
then you would hear it as teaching our citizenry to push the country forward."
