What should I do if I can't get the supports that I need?
Well I guess you've got to start on a process - I guess we could call it a complaints process
- where at the start you've got to make sure that you articulate - either through yourself
or an advocate or a parent - what it is that you're going to need that's going to accommodate
your disability. You've got to make that clear to your teaching staff. If that isn't successful,
then you really just have to go through a series of ramping up your complaint. And so
you might have for example the principal of the school that you might want to have a meeting
with. You might want to make an appointment with a Disability Liaison Officer at a TAFE
or a university. You might right to the regional office. And you just keep escalating you complaint
until I guess you feel that you can't go any further.
One of the most important things is to make sure that this process is a quick one. Because
what ca happen is that you can find yourself after a whole year, having gone through a
complaints process that hasn't resulted in any good luck for you. And that means that
really you haven't had access to your education properly for a year. And that really can have
a significant impact on your education, so don't wait too long.
