ALSO's Reading and Parents Program, or RAPP, is one of ALSO's family literacy initiatives.
RAPP is an outreach program that provides parents with the materials and support to
build on what they are already doing.
Parents borrow the packs for two weeks to a month and are supported by caring ALSO staff
and volunteers to use the packs at home.
Children benefit from a focus on emergent literacy while parents improve their own skills
and confidence, helping them to create a positive learning environment in the home.
RAPP is little enough to know the names of all the families it serves but big enough
to reach out to well over 100 families each year throughout the Lowertown, Sandy Hill
and Vanier communities at several partner sites.
We have 62 packs in our collection and we are adding more packs every year.
RAPP packs are little enough that they're easily transportable but big enough that they
provide hours of fun and child and parent engagement.
RAPP packs contain a quality book, poem, songs, activity sheets and a craft, based on the
theme of the book.
RAPP packs are little enough that all materials are made for little hands and minds but big
enough that they provide materials for a wide age range.
RAPP packs are customized for each family so that all children can have an activity
and a book according to their age.
RAPP is little enough that it can maintain it's relationship with its existing families
and community partners but big enough to continue expanding to meet the needs of the Ottawa
community.
In 2007, RAPP expanded in a joint effort with the Inuit Family Resource Centre and added
five titles with an Inuit focus and tip sheets translated into Inuktitut and syllabics.
Most recently RAPP has expanded to produce ASL videos of ten of its titles for hearing
parents with deaf children.
RAPP packs are little enough that not a lot of people are needed to maintain the quality
of its delivery but big enough that it engages volunteers of all ages from all over the Ottawa
community.
