Let me introduce you to the Harrod timber cold frame, which has many uses, it can be
very useful for over winter in plants, it can extend your growing season, it can also
be very useful for starting off your seedlings. Or its perfect use is after you've actually
started your stuff off in your greenhouse for the actual hardening off process. The
timber cold frame can be used on allotment or standard raised beds, the timber cold frame
design can also be used straight on the open ground. A pea-single or paving platform is
particularly useful so the plants can benefit from the stone heat. Just to show you how
simple it is to fit this cold from to our allotment and standard raised bed, just pop
it onto the wooden raised bed and simply fix it in place with four of these aluminium long-lasting
raised brackets. The highest-quality materials are used in this design. It's made from thick
sections of FSE timber that is high-pressure treated with a safe preserve to ensure the
best possible resistance to fungal decay and wood-boring insects. Durability and rigidity
is bought to the design with the aluminium strengthening plates that are used on the
lid as well as the steel galvanised hinges. It is glazed with polycarbonate panels that
are high-specification measuring 4mm in thickness. They're also fitted with rainwater drain-holes
in the lid to prevent the build-up of water. While heat retention is important via these
polycarbonate panels, which also by the way prevent scorching, in a cold frame, ventilation
is very important. One of the advantages of this is you can have partial ventilation by
just lifting the lid slightly and fixing it in, then you've just got this gentle flow
of air there which provides the air flow needed to prevent fungal diseases. And on a really
hot day when you need full ventilation you can then give ventilation using these support
arms, which are very easy to put into place -- and there you are plenty of air flow and
perfect growing conditions.
