Oil and gas were originally first formed hundreds and million years ago
when our green earth
could only be seen in sapphire blue.
Over years and years of seasons
the sea floor got covered in the
remains of plants and sea creatures.
The remains built up in thick layers
and eventually the surface was covered
by layers of sand and silt.
Over the periods, the pressure of all
these heavy layers compressed the lower
layers into sedi- mentary rock.
Enormous heat and pressure
converted the remains of the animals and plants into oil and gas.
Most of the oil and gas we extract come from such deposits.
To get oil and gas, we drill through layers
of sand, silt and rock to reach the oil & gas reserves.
Oil and gas are found in geological structures that work almost like a “lid”,
it stops the oil and gas from entering the surface level.
Those structures have the following characters:
Example: Anticlinal trap
•Geological history that has enabled oil and gas to develop
•A layer of porous rock that holds the oil and gas
•Upper and lower layers of non-porous rock that trap oil and gas from rising to the surface.
Natural gas is found above the oil because the gas is less dense than oil.
Also, why oil and gas are able to rise above water is because of this same reason.
Oil and gas are less dense than water.
