If you have been praying for
rain, you can stop now.
Whats up with this Debbie?
Im hoping shes a thing of the
past and that none of her
girlfriends are coming this way
for Summer vacation.
This is the sunshine state and
I just cant be the only
sunshine in your life.
I am the one who have a
reputation to live up to.
There are a lot of expectations
on me and my performance.
I am talking about my TV show,
I Know Jax, where is your mind?
You, my loyal audience, expect
greatness from me or at least
goodness - as you should.
Then CW17, our TV station,
expect the highest quality from
me every week.
Our show has even been upgraded
to a glorious HD broadcast now
where every little flaw or tiny
imperfection gets exposed in
high def sharpness. Yeah...
The pressure is on.
You know Im a big arena
football fan and follow the
Sharks team closely and in an
odd way, I think I can relate
to the pressure those guys are
under to bring home the Arena
Bowl Championship.
Another thing we have in common
is careful preparation and
planning before game day.
I know it looks easy.
Here I am chit chatting away
with you on a Saturday night.
Nothing to it, right? Wrong.
Before I get up here in front
of the camera I have to
prepare, do my stretching and
voice warm up routine, then
mentally prepare and visualize
my performance.
Then I suit up and spend hours
in make up to get ready for
that high def sharpness.
OK, OK. I hear you.
Ill stop now.
Lets get on with the show.
the Jacksonville Sharks players
are not the only ones who have
to carefully plan and prepare
for game day.
Theres also the girls of the
Shark Attack Dance Team.
They work just as hard to bring
the best performance on game
day, and for every game, they
prepare a new routine.
Just take a look.
The Shark Attack dance team is
part of the excitement at the
arena every game.
Next, lets take a look at what
to do in the Summer right here
in Jacksonville.
If you listen to popular
media, or read magazines, or
blogs, spending Summer in the
City for most has no
attraction.
And all that can be true , in
New York City, Chicago or some
other metropolitan area.
But here in Jacksonville,
Summer in the city is not that
bad.
We have the beach, and we have
the weather to go with it, as
long as Debbie and her
girlfriends can stay at arm
lengths of course.
So we agree, summer in the
city can be fun.
Many of us actually end up
spending more time with our
families during the summer too.
The kids are out of school and
we dont have to worry about
things like book report
deadlines, homework not being
done or lunch boxes needing to
be packed.
So lets take a look at what to
do in Jacksonville with your
family this summer.
Tuesdays are *** days,
because on Tuesdays you get in
for free from 4 to 9 p.m.
Its a great opportunity to
explore the permanent
collections or special
exhibitions, and you can also
take a stroll in the historic
*** Gardens.
Actually, you also get free
general admission to the Museum
on the first full weekend of
every month if you are a Bank
of America or Merrill Lynch
card holder.
Thats pretty cool.
You can actually get a lot done
during that Tuesday free time,
so I think its an excellent
suggestion.
More art can be explored at
MOCA, or the Museum of
Contemporary Art.
The museum is always free
during the Art Walk, which
happens the first wednesday of
the month.
Moca is also free for Sundays.
Young Kids will enjoy the Art
Explorum Loft on the 5th floor.
It has 6 fun and interactive
stations exploring art.
So make sure to check that out.
Free family sundays at MOCA
are from noon to 4 pm.
I'm sure you've heard about a
girl named Sue. She's a T.
Rex, which is a ferocious
dinosaur and right now the
replica, Sue, who was made from
a cast of an actual T.
rex is exhibited at MOSH.
Sue is a 42-feet long, 12-feet
tall, and weighs in at 3,500
pounds, Sue is the largest,
most complete Tyrannosaurus rex
ever discovered.
The exhibit also includes a dig
pit, video footage, and
free-standing interactive
exhibits.
Kids can touch casts of Sue's
arm, rib, tail bone and teeth;
and peek into the cretaceous
world through the eyes of a T.
rex. The best time to visit is
Fridays because they have the
special 5 dollar ticket.
On Fridays Mosh is actually
open until 8 pm.
The exhibit, A T.
rex Named Sue, is now at MOSH
until September 23rd.
On July 14 theres a big
celebration at MOSH, no, Im not
talking about the French
National Holiday - its Toncas
big day.
Daisy May, MOSHs resident
possum, is throwing a birthday
party for Tonca the alligator
snapping turtle, because Tonca
turns 46.
Shes almost over the hill!
Party activities will take
place from 1 to 3 p.m.
and will include face painting,
party games, animal encounters
and cake, of course!
The party will culminate with
Toncas annual weigh-in at the
newly renovated Hixon Native
Plant Courtyard.
For more details about these
events, look for the Summer in
the City at www.iknowjax.com.
Im sure you have great ideas
about what to do in
Jacksonville during the Summer.
Make sure to share them with
our community on our Facebook
page.
And dont forget to share your
photos of you having fun too.
Well have more stories for you,
right after this.
Fashion is something I care
deeply about, as you can tell.
I often wear a black shirt,
because I have several of them,
and Ive been told its a good
color for me.
But our reporter Carla Mechele
loves fashion.
This is something she has in
common with one of Americas
Next Top Models, Yoanna House.
What designers do you like?
Who are your favorites?
I'm more classic now that I
have gotten a little bit older.
I definitely love vintage.
I love old YSL.
I love old Gucci with Tom Ford
if I can ever find it.
It's really hard. I love J Crew.
I could probably shop there
once a week.
I really love Chanel, I collect
a lot of vintage Chanel jewelry.
And I really, really love Marc
Jacobs.
Marc by Marc Jacobs, it's young
and it's pretty reasonable,
especially when they have sales.
I love Helmut Lang for blazers
and leather, pants and leather,
leggings. Yeah.
I know you are a fashion nut
who started at an early age.
It has been said that you got
your first subscription to
Vogue at age ten, tell me about
that.
My grandmother would stay in
our home with my family six
months out of the year from
Mexico City.
She wanted me to translate her
fashion magazines.
The subscription came in my
name.
I would look and translate it
from English to Spanish.
The collection started growing,
the subscriptions.
Then in high school I went
international and learned about
British and French style.
I'm still addicted to
magazines.
I read about 20 to 30 a month.
My fun money goes to getting
international magazines.
You have a three year old boy.
How does it feel to dress him
up?
I really got carried away when
he was first born.
We go to London a lot.
I would try to find the most
unique boutiques.
European clothing for kids is
just amazing!
I would get him lots of
sweaters and coats and bring it
to New York.
He'd get so chubby and grew out
of it so fast, it was such a
waste.
It's really hard to dress a
boy, not a lot of options.
It's either grungy or too
preppy.
I don't mind sometimes, but
it's hard to go into a store
and find something unique.
I dig European stores for that.
Your on the panel tonight, tell
me about that.
There's a bunch of great people
here to discuss the industry.
If someone in the audience
wants to get into fashion
designing or merchandising, or
modeling.
We're here to give our personal
stories.
It's the opposite to how you
got discovered, because Tyra
was avising you.
What was some of the best
advice you got?
I've known Tyra for a long time.
She's always guiding me.
I don't really ask her to many
question, I just watch her and
admire her.
She is a great business woman.
She is very vivacious and very
bright.
She knows so much regarding
fashion and television.
I kind of let her talk without
asking a lot of questions.
What color and trend should we
see for spring?
Spring is definitely leaping
into lots of fluorescence and
bright colors, white, hot pink,
bright orange.
Skinny jeans, I don't recommend
everyone wearing them.
They are not cut flattering for
most women.
I don't get too caught up in
that.
It's about being comfortable
and look put together.
And last, your favorite
personal thing to wear?
I'm a lingerie junkie.
I got spoiled living in New
York going to all the special
boutiques.
If you are wearing something
really pretty underneath, it
gives you that confidence.
Just kind of be a really sexy
woman.
I heard that Yoannas dad is
a doctor, its true.
Hes Doctor House.
I always knew that I wouldnt
become a doctor even though I
really like science.
I dont have a very good
bed-side manner, and I also
dont look good in white.
Hence the black shirt.
Ill be back South Carolina is
a popular destination for
Summer vacation and weekend
getaway trips.
Its not that far from our area,
and Summer is a great time to
visit.
Lets take a look at two fun
events in that area in july.
First up, Charleston.
In the Summer you can
participate in an event
combining fine art and fine
food during The Palette and
Palate Strolls.
I really have to concentrate to
be able to get through that
phrase; palette, palate.
Charleston serves up gourmet
food events every year by the
pallets.
Fine art and food connoisseurs
will gather in Charleston to
stroll through the historic
downtown area, tasting food
from twelve of the finest local
restaurants inside twelve
prestigious galleries.
This annual event has become
one of the most anticipated
visual art and fine food events
in the South.
This year the Palette and
Palate Stroll takes place on
Friday July 13, 2012.
For details about pairings of
food and galleries, visit
www.coastalcompanion.com If
you visit the downtown area of
Charleston this Summer,
remember to stop by the Farmers
market at Marion Square.
Its a great place to people
watch, and one of my favorite
places to sit down in the shade
and have a quick bite to eat
before you continue exploring
the city.
The Farmers market is open
every Saturdays 8.00 am - 2
pm.in marion square.
Beaufort, South Carolina,
celebrates summer with the
biggest festival of the year.
The Beaufort Water Festival.
This is a week long event with
a smorgasbord of happenings so
diverse that I lack words for
even describing it.
The mixed bag of tricks on the
agenda includes Water Craft
Sports and fishing events, arts
& crafts, a pageant, Blessing
of the fleet, lots of sports
events, and nightly
entertainment.
Theres even an air show for
cryin out loud.
The Beaufort Water Festival is
scheduled for July 13 -22,
2012.
You can find the detailed
schedule on
