Hello and welcome to 'hi5english'
your guide to teaching English as a second language
to young and very young learners
and today we're going to talk about how to practice vocabulary
as you might remember, in one of the videos
I told how I introduced vocabulary
and today we'll talk about practicing it
well, normally I do it on the floor
let me just move on the floor and we'll continue
so, here I have milk, juice and cookies
let's begin with introducing it to imaginary children
that are sitting behind the camera
as you remember, we go from concrete to abstract
and we introduce every object in isolation
and it goes like this
milk
and they say, "Milk"
juice
they say, "Juice"
and cookies
they say, "Cookies"
and then you line them up
and it goes like, "Juice, milk, cookies"
and the next part is very important
because the last object that you introduce should be the first object that you practice
and it is very important to remember
if you use it in every class, it gives great results
after you line them up here
you say, "Cookies"
and then you go to them
they're sitting right here
and you give these cookies to a child
and you say, "Cookies"
and you give it to them
give them some time to explore cookies
they'll try to open them
they'll try to bite it
as long as it doesn't go very crazy
just give them time to explore these cookies
and then ask them
to give these cookies
to a person that is sitting next to the child
and then do it again, again and again
so, they'll pass these cookies from the child on the left to the child on the right
or right to left, it doesn't really matter
then you take the cookies from them
and then you say, "Milk"
and they repeat, "Milk"
and then you go to the opposite end
if you started from the left, you go to the right
and if you started from the right, you go to the left
in this case, I'll go to the "right"
and you give them milk
and, again, allow some time to explore
and then they'll pass milk around
with the 3rd object - juice
you can either go again to the left
or I normally go to the middle
and then either to the left or to the right
and it goes like this
juice
and they pass juice here
I take juice from this side, from the left
and then I pass it to the right
and it goes back to the middle
so, this is the end of your first activity
when you practice vocabulary
the second activity
again, isolation
and because juice was the last
in the previous activity
it should be the first in this one
and you say again, "Juice"
and then you ask a child to come to you
well, in the place where I work
they say, "Who can try?"
if your nursery or kindergarten use the same phrase
then go for it
well, I normally say, "Who can try?"
and children reply, "I can try."
I say, "OK, Jack/John/whoever. Come here."
and, "Juice"
and they touch juice
and you do the same with milk and cookies
just don't forget to isolate them
milk, then cookies
basically, you do the same thing
you're naming these objects
but because you change activities
so far we considered 2 of them
children don't get bored and they don't get tired
but technically you're doing the same thing
and the last activity that I use
after I've introduced vocabulary
is this
you take an object
and now you're going to them again
but instead of passing the object around
you let them touch it
you do the same thing as in the 2nd activity
but instead of them coming to you
you go to them
and it goes like this
you take milk
and you go, "Milk"
don't let them pass it around, just give it to them
it's the same thing but from a different prospective
and then you go, "Milk, milk, milk"
then you take cookies
and, again, I went from left to right
now I'm going from right to left
"Cookies, cookies, cookies"
and the same thing with juice
I go middle-right or middle-left
it doesn't really matter
I'll to the right, "Juice, juice, juice"
then I take it and, "Juice, juice, juice"
that's it
after you've done these 3 activities
you line up the objects again
and it goes like, "Juice, cookies, milk"
and then you move on to the next stage
that we'll discuss in my next video
and for now goodbye, thanks for watching
and if you have any questions or any comments
leave them in a section below
and I'll see you in a new episode of 'hi5english'
that should be out in a couple of days
Goodbye!
