[Activating a Course in Western Online]
[Presented by Chad Dennis]
[Chad Dennis] This is Chad and today I'm going to talk about
activating your class sections in Western Online.
Activating your sessions is something
that you need to do every semester for any course
that you want to use Western Online for.
In order to do that we need to go to the log in page
and this is what the log in page looks like here.
And instead of actually logging in we will click on
Faculty Resources over here to the left.
When you click on that you will get a window
that pops up with a few options in there
and what we want to choose is Activate/Modify a Section
which is located right here.
When you click on Activate/Modify a Section
your going to be able to access your course immediately.
You're students will automatically be enrolled
in the grade book and into the rooster
it's all intergrated with [STARS]
so it's all done automatically.
And the students will have access to the [STARS]
Start and End date and you can change that
and I'll show you that here in just a second.
So after you click on
Deactivate/Modify a Section link
you will get this window here
and any courses that you are listed
as the instructor of record
will show up in a list
and for this instructor they are only teaching
1 course so they have GCOM418.
And the first thing that you want to make sure
that you have selected correctly
is up here were it says term
we'll chose the correct term
so here we have Fall 2008.
If your not seeing courses that you think
should be there that's the first thing
you'll want to check.
So in order to actually activate the course
we'll click on the activate button
which is located here.
And then next to the activate button
we have the Section Begin and End dates.
And we have the little calendar icon located there
that you can use to change the dates.
If you want students either to get the to the course
a little bit sooner or have a little bit longer
time to get to the course.
Now when you click activate
it's going to it might take a couple minutes
but when it's activated it will actually
say activated in big, big green letters in this section.
And if you change the dates
that activate button will turn
into a Save Dates button.
So when you change your dates
you want to make sure you want to click save dates.
So after you activated your courses
when you go to log into Western Online
all your courses that are activated
will be listed in your course list.
And you may get an error
when you try to log into Western Online.
And I'll show you what that looks like
Here's my log in page
and I'm going to go down here to Faculty Resources
I'm gonna click Activate/Modify a Section
And right here it's going to ask you for your ECOM
username and password.
And I'll click log in.
Now I get an error [No Courses Listed]
The reason I get this error is because I am not
teaching any courses.
If you get this error that means
that you are not listed as the instructor
of record with the registrar's office.
If you get this error you need to contact
the registrar's office and or your department.
To make sure that you are listed
as the instructor of record.
It maybe listed as staff once they make
that correction and you go to activate
your sessions they will show up
you won't get this error and you'll be able
to activate your courses.
