Hey! Look at that!
Do you know that Body Shop's plastic PET bottles are 100% recyclable and contain at least 60% recycled materials?
No, but why does it matter? Normal bottles serve the same purpose.
It matters!
Singapore generated 803,400 tons of plastic waste last year and only 10% was recycled.
Plastic bottles take up landfill space, and many coastal cities use the ocean as a dumping ground.
Yes! And this results in depleted fish stock, polluted beaches, and health issues.
To save space at landfills, plastics are often burned in incinerators. And this contributes to greenhouse gases.
Also, plastic takes a long time to break down
Yeah! Plastics also contain harmful chemicals such as cadmium and lead.
These chemicals can cause health risks for both wildlife and humans.
You mean like cancer, brain damage, and perhaps even death?
Oh my! Now I know. Let's go to Body Shop to support their cause now!
I want to have a purposeful life.
To become an eco-friendly bottle that contributes to the environment!
Just then... An idea occurs to Billy. He will join the Body Shop!
Billy the bottle...
You have responded to the call and travelled long and far...
I will train you to become Body Shop's most eco-friendly bottle...
Thank you Master *** Fu! I will do my best!
The first few days were long and hard.
Master *** Fu had to train Billy in Body Shop's current strategies
and teach him all their theoretical frameworks.
We are made of Post Consumer Recyclate, otherwise known as PCR, to reduce environmental impact.
Our creator is the first international cosmetics retailer
to use plastic bottles containing 100% PCR
and we try to include it in all packaging where possible...
Through the PREVENTIVE PRINCIPLE, we prevent any negative impacts at the earliest possible time.
We are also striving to better dispose reject products
by splitting them back into their components and recycling them...
Our creator also has a wood positive campaign.
They plant and protect trees to offset their use of paper-based packaging.
This is in adherence to the POLLUTERS' PAY principle.
Ah!
All our actions are following Carroll's CSR Pyramid!
We are engaging in ethical behaviours, doing what is right, and avoiding harm to the environment!
Just when all seemed well, Billy overheard some scandals about the Body Shop
Firstly, Green-washing to the public.
The Body Shop has been accused of sustained greenwashing to the public.
The Body Shop has its own eco-conscious symbol
claiming their products are shown to meet environmental standards.
However, their symbol is created by the Body Shop themselves
and is not supported by any international certification.
Secondly, conflict of brand image.
In 2006, The Body Shop was sold to L'Oréal for $1.1 billion dollars.
the world's largest cosmetics company that had not abandoned animal testing.
Customers were outraged
as it appeared to be a founder abandoning her principles in the face of money
This situation may have undermined all of Body Shop's existing green efforts
as the company's actions conflicted with their intended brand image.
With that, Billy was losing hope.
Until one day, it struck him that he
must be the change he wants to see in the world.
He decided that he would send a letter to Body Shop's HQ
offering them recommendations for the future.
Firstly, a fully closed loop system
The Body Shop can use a newly created, 100% natural material
for all their product packagings.
This material is made from sugar bagasse pulp paper
coated with sugarcane lignin and printed using vegetable-based inks.
All components of this material does not rely on oil extraction
and is totally 100% compostable and recyclable.
With this, The Body Shop will have a fully closed loop system
and not contribute any product packaging waste into the environment
Secondly, obtain certification to increase transparency.
The Body Shop should seek international certification
such as from the ISO 14020 series
to affirm its green efforts.
Also, The Body Shop can advocate transparency
and publish a short documentary of how their new products are made.
However, there is only so much that companies can do
to minimize the impacts caused by product packaging disposal.
Ultimately, consumers need to make the right purchase decisions.
Billy was recognised for his recommendations
and became the ambassador for The Body Shop's new disposable packaging.
Thank you everyone! All of you can be just like me.
Let me teach you how!
First, look for minimal or lightweight packaged goods.
Buy refillable products and their refills
Bring your own carrier bag.
Buy in bulk.
Be proactive and brave in asking a company's recycling programs.
Choose biodegradable packaging like corn and sugarcane.
