Universities lie at the heart of successful economies around the world.
It's a well-recognized point.
The innovations that come out of universities, the discoveries that come
out of universities, the young trained people that come out of universities
the jobs that are created as a result of the discoveries that come out
of universities, and quite frankly the ideas and concepts that we haven't
even thought about that will be our future economy.
The research may be fundamental and it may be basic in the sense that
yes, I will be supported by industry, because the application of the knowledge
that results is too long term.
But on the other hand, those of us who work in fields which are perceived as
being basic, or termed basic, always have
as the underground, underlying issues is what is the question that
we're going to be answering that's important for solving a societal problem?
Sustainable energy is clearly a driving issue.
Issues with global climate and global climate change,
energy efficiency,
clearly as we're seeing not only health-care delivery but issues
that relate to health care and improvement in disease.
That's where the federal government is going to be investing.
Clearly that's
a lot of the research strengths on our campus are in those areas, and so I
see that this is where
we'll be focusing our energies where they'll be lots of new funding
initiatives
and hopefully, and I'm planning that UCR will be very successful in
securing funding for
and making its name as a
premier research institution in the nation.
