The game of spades is one of the classic American card games. Spades is in the same family as
bridge and bid whist. Other card games are similar because they have a trump taking aspect
and a trick taking aspect. Spades is much related to those other two games. Spades was
created in Cincinnati in 1937 by a group of college students who are also bid whist players.
The game was immensely popular at the time it was created because it combined the best
of bid whist and bridge. The original version of spades that was created is often called
classic spades or old school spades and is played primarily by the African American community.
The modern game of spades is one that developed would be the rise of the internet in the mid
to late 1990's and a number of the rules the popular game features includes the use of
mills and bags. However, the history of the game, again, goes back about seventy years
to Cincinnati, Ohio. This game has become a great classic and right now is the number
one partnership card game in the United States and is also played in other locales throughout
the world. So again this is a great game, it's got wonderful roots and it continues
to grow.
